21st Grundy Corn Festival Parade Drawing 15000 Viewers
Overcast skies and pleasant 72 degree weather greeted Grundy County as its 21st annual Corn Festival parade drew more than 15 000 spectators, topping estimates. The 12 block route along W Washington and Liberty Streets lasted two hours and 20 minutes, guided by Tom Dzuryak. Floats numbered 24, with 19 bands and multiple drill teams, and awards honored top high school and grade school bands, drum and bugle corps, and floats. Notable participants included Morris and Ottawa entries, with a U S Air Force Band from Chanute leading the procession.

Handicrafts Galore At Grundy County Home Display
Residents of the Grundy County Home showcased crafts at the Corn Festival Handi craft and Creative Hobby Show held in the Morris Savings and Loan building. Awards honored Lena Helland, Teresa Anderson, Ruth Lasser, Mary Bretto, Julia Thompson, and Harvey and Ora Taylor for crocheted potholders, goblet marbles, plastic bag rugs, blue ribbons for burlap arrangements, Christmas wreath, and dolls from apples and dough. Further blue ribbons went to Dorothy Mattson for paper mache religious dolls and dried flower pictures and to Betty and Jean Cheshareek for a star rug plus Jean for painted textile pillows.

A Liberty Street kiddie parade featured diverse entrants led by Denise Burgess, Gardner-South Wilmington High School senior. Crowds Attend Morris Corn Festival Dances
Crowds gathered at the Morris Fire Station for Saturday dances at the corn festival. Teenagers danced until 9:30 p.m. to the Gyratron Band, while Bubbles Orchestra played for the adults from 9:30 p.m. to midnight. Firemen served about 900 cups of soft drinks plus 15 dozen donuts and coffee.

Seven-year-old wins Crackerbox Derby in 9.4 seconds
Mark Matteson, 7, son of Donald and [Mrs.] Matteson of 504 E. Benton St., won the Crackerbox Derby amid about 300 spectators on Nettle Street. His plywood, two-ended racer with dual brakes finished in 9.4 seconds, earning $8 and a trophy to be awarded later. Randy Reynolds, Tim Perry, and Scott Mitchell placed second through fourth with times of 9.6, 11.21, and 11.35 seconds and prizes of $7 $6 and $5 respectively.

Two Children Win Button Awards At Morris Festival
Two youngsters won prize buttons at Morris Community High School field during a Sunday drawing before fireworks. Miss Geri Mulvihill, 12, Immaculate Conception Grade School, held No. 6049 to claim the top $100 cash prize. Kenny Crenshaw, 7, Franklin School, won one of two $50 prizes. Other unclaimed numbers included 6688 for $50, 3885 and 3754 for $25 prizes, and 6535 for a bike.

North of Morris Illinois 47 crash kills mother and injures infant
A 21 year old Newark mother, Mrs Eugene Thurow, died of head and internal injuries after a head on crash with James Knowles 22 of Sullivan Indiana on Illinois 47, three miles north of Morris. Her 11 month old daughter Jasme Lee was treated for a broken leg and listed in good condition. The accident occurred as Thurow's southbound car crossed the center line into Knowles' truck. The ship wreck distance figures were 459 feet for the truck and 39.7 feet for the car.

Fire hits Morris paper mill blower in lamination area
A motor wiring fault in a blower in the laminating department penthouse at Federal Paper Board Co. caused a smoldering fire. Morris Fire Department fought the blaze after the mill fire unit was unable to stop it. Production continues at a reduced level as repairs are awaited. Fire crews also responded to a separate Sunday incident at Morris Community High School where bonfire materials ignited.
