Coal City boards reviews track plans at local school site

The Coal City Community Unit No. 1 Board discussed a 440 yard oval track with Chamlin and Associates. They scheduled a June 11 return for full plans and a lump sum cost, with a possible June bid and June award.

Morris council discusses Parklake Village and licenses

Morris Illinois city leaders debated nine planning requirements for Parklake Village with a call to limit future dealings to the Morris Development Corp and its president. The council invited planners and the developer to a meeting while approving three Mission Hill Subdivision ordinances and examining liquor licensing rules for a Joliet based partnership. The body also considered park funding options and authorized buying Listek land for a sewer right of way and a grant funded park mower.

Coal City Police Chief Resigns. Testa to Act as Interim Leader

Coal City Village Board unanimously accepted the resignation of Police Chief Allen Conant effective June 1. Police Commissioner James Testa will serve as acting police chief until further notice. Conant, hired in 1971 after 20 years as a Hammond, Indiana officer, cites personal reasons. The board also approved final plat for Pompano Subdivision and rezoning actions for John Perona and Warren Brainard properties.

Two Injured In Crash Near Dwight

Timothy Brown 23 of Fort Riley Kansas is in guarded condition and James Perkins 25 of Springfield in satisfactory condition after their car collided with a northbound semi on U S 66 one half mile north of Illinois 47 at 7 15 p m Tuesday Perkins lost control crossed the median and skidded into the trailer driven by Edward Drews 56 of Niles Drews not injured The car was described as totally destroyed and a ticket for improper lane use is pending against Perkins Both injured were rushed to St James Hospital by Van Qualen Ambulance service

Park district vote set for Kendall and Bristol Townships

Bradley defeats Yorty to become Los Angeles' first Black mayor

Thomas Bradley, a Black former police lieutenant with Texas roots, unseated incumbent Sam Yorty in a nonpartisan race with 56.3 percent of the vote to take a four year term starting July. Bradley called the win a dream fulfilled as Los Angeles becomes the largest U.S. city led by a Black chief executive. Yorty conceded amid charges of racial attacks and low turnout. Bradley's victory follows a strong primary showing and marks a historic shift in city politics.

Jury to decide $750000 Hodgen damage suit in Grundy

Closing arguments were to be heard today in Grundy County Circuit Court in the $750 000 Russell Hodgen damage suit with the case going to the jury for their consideration Hodgen 42 of 195 Irving St Coal City is suing Ray J Benoit & Sons Co for injuries incurred by falling from a scaffold after a temporary guard rail constructed by the Benoit Co collapsed

Morris Savings assets reach new high at 27.6 million

Morris Savings & Loan Association reports assets of 27,611,564.17 at its shareholders meeting led by George H. Baum and Arthur R. Leach. Loans rose 30 percent to 6,725,705. insured savings gained 12.5 percent to 3,100,000. interest paid to savers hit 1,199,238.50. New officers include Baum as chairman and Leach as president, with a full slate of directors and staff named.
