Skylab mission continues as Dr. Joseph P. Kerwin points a $107 million solar telescope array at the sun to study solar influence on the solar system and fusion energy. Spacecraft crew Charles Conrad Jr. and Paul J. Weitz prepare earth observation cameras for a 28 day flight.
About 150 youths aged 15 to 20 were arrested at Babler State Park during Memorial Day weekend on suspicion of possessing marijuana or alcohol as minors. Two were also booked on weapon charges after guns were found in a car. Protesters gathered near the park entrance after a week with a fatal pedestrian incident.
Over Memorial Day weekend a River Grove man died in a Grundy County crash and four others injured in Kendall County. Carl E. Dial, 49, of River Grove died at the scene after his car collided with a northbound vehicle driven by Beverly J. Robinson, 45, of Gardner. Robinson was treated at St. Joseph Hospital Joliet. A separate Kendall County crash at US 52 and Lisbon Road sent four people to Morris Hospital, including Aileen Forsberg and Jeannette Buchanan of Rockford. Cannon of Rockford was cited for failure to reduce speed. Six more were taken to St. Joseph Hospital after a two car I-55 crash near Gardner Road. The fatalities and injuries prompted inquest arrangements and funeral plans for Dial in Decatur Illinois.
A Sunday blaze in a southwest Side industrial area damaged four buildings with estimates ranging from 30 to 50 million dollars. Fire officials and insurers cautioned the final loss would require weeks of accounting. Four people were injured, and investigators cited possible lightning as the ignition with a security guard recalling a loud thunderstorm before the blast.
Memorial services were held Monday with a parade from Center School to the courthouse. The Morris Grade School Band played as American Legion Post 294 leaders welcomed attendees. The Rev. Norval Wigtil and Rev. Donald Kocher delivered prayers and the main address. Wreaths were laid by local auxiliaries and veterans groups, and a VFW firing squad carried out taps.
A Winnebago County Circuit Court jury in Rockford convicts Piche and Reimann of murder theft and armed robbery tied to the December 29 Pine Street incident. The verdict follows Saturday morning proceedings.

Seville Lovel presented a plaque and a $283 cashier's check from local businessmen. Ward called the honor a real privilege.
A stormy weekend dumped 2.09 inches in Morris and lifted the Illinois River to 11.60 feet, delaying park activities at Stratton State Park while rainfall totals climbed to 7 inches in May. Tornadoes across the Midwest and South killed at least 48 people in 11 states, with widespread destruction and flood damage.
Rain halted the Indy 500 for the second day as drivers completed the pace lap before the start. The race was postponed from Monday after a fiery nine car crash left one driver seriously burned and spectators injured.

Illinois State Police Superintendent Dwight Pittman told about 100 attendees at Morris Eagles Liberty Under Law dinner that police must police themselves and resist dissent as a force for violence. He cited Watergate and urged impartial enforcement, professionalism, and restored public trust, backed by Area 1 officials.
