A Grundy County jury awarded Russell Hodgen $535000 for injuries from a April 18 1969 fall 14 feet from a guard rail at Lowell High School. Hodgen sued Ray J Benoit & Sons Co alleging negligent guard rail construction and failure to test. The verdict, the largest in Grundy County damages history, came after four hours of deliberation.

Warden and deputy killed in Holmesburg Prison stabbing
Two prison officials, Warden Patrick Curran and Deputy Warden Robert F. Fromhold, were stabbed to death during a disturbance at Holmesburg City Prison in Philadelphia. A spokesman confirmed the identities from the superintendent’s office.

Parents plead innocent to daughter sale charges
Michael and Rita Flynn of Bolingbrook pleaded innocent to reduced charges in a case involving the alleged sale of their 12 year old daughter to Oak Park man Harold Miller. Miller, accused of buying the girl for 26000, also pleaded innocent to reduced charges. Judge Bucher set June 15 for arguments on a mental competency motion. The Flynns were arrested March 20, and Miller and the girl were taken into custody in Asheville North Carolina.

Jail Break Attempt Foiled at County Jail
A routine security check at the County Jail at 8 a.m. uncovered debris and a six foot pry bar used in an escape attempt. Police believe brothers Clifford Bermingham and Chris Bermingham arranged the break in Hazel Crest and both face multiple escape charges with bail set at five thousand dollars each. They appeared before Circuit Judge Robert Malmquist and were ordered bound over to the grand jury with preliminary hearings set for Monday.
