The body of 19 year old Southern Illinois University freshman Fred Banks was recovered Monday from Evergreen Terrace Lake south of the SIU campus. Jackson County Coroner Don Ragsdale said there was no immediate foul play and an autopsy was planned. Banks from New Jersey had been reported missing after failing to checkout on Saturday. He was an accounting student and had joined the SIU basketball squad but lacked an athletic scholarship.
A Michigan man shot Illinois secretary of state investigator Russell Waller, 47, in the Dixie Truckers Home parking area on Interstate 55 near McLean. Waller was treated at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bloomington in fair condition. The gunman died at the scene after shooting himself following a confrontation.
Reagan paid at least several hundred dollars in federal income tax for 1970 but will not disclose the exact figure. Press secretary Jim Lake noted his overall tax history and referenced a 1970 business downturn as a factor. He cited Reagan’s 1970 through 1975 tax total of 154,712 dollars on earnings of 810,771 dollars.
The Morris Community High School Board will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the annex to continue review of the proposed 1976-77 budget. They began the session last Wednesday and discussed a building improvement list estimated at 296,300 dollars.
