County Clerk Tom Parks received a notice from Secretary of State Michael J. Howlett stating the annual filing deadline is April 30, 1973. Persons in required positions must file yearly by April 30, with this year’s rule marking a renewed requirement for 1973 unless already filed this calendar year.
Morris City Council discussed the proposed 10 acre plus lighted park and heard negotiations with property owners are ongoing. Alderman Hornsby urged advertising for properties suitable for recreation and set an April 9 submission deadline. The measure passed unanimously.
Coal City Mayor Joseph T. Phillips authorized applying for federal and state grants to fund sewage chlorination facilities to meet EPA rules. Estimated cost 35 000 to 40 000 dollars with potential 75 percent federal and 5 percent state grants. The board also noted EPA permit needs for wastewater discharges and reviewed a television contract matter and boards appointments.
Deputy Treasury Secretary William Simon said no gasoline rationing will be required this summer though inventories are about five percent below last year and spot shortages may occur in some areas. He noted the administration will act to prevent a serious shortage without relying on rationing authority. The Economic Stabilization Act extension remains in place.
The Gardner Village Board accepted the Zoning and Planning Board recommendation to deny Nielsen Grain Co. a variance. The board also accepted another Zoning and Planning Board recommendation to allow James Jensen to build two homes on the former Spiller property. Robert Pickles received a permit to build a home on Dwight and Center Streets. Frank Humbert reported satisfactory progress on drainage work, followed by a discussion on sewer and drainage issues.
A clouded but mostly sunny day brings a high in the upper 50s with a tonight low near 40. Wednesday will be considerably cloudy with a chance of showers and a high again in the upper 50s. Monday recorded a high of 56 degrees at Dresden Island Locks and Dam while the low remained undetailed. at 7 a.m. today the temperature was 39 degrees and downtown Morris reached 53 at 10:30 a.m.
Gov. Dan Walker defended appointing his son-in-law, David H. Vaught, to the state payroll at 12588 a year. Vaught, 25, West Point graduate and Walker’s son-in-law, began as Southern Illinois tourism supervisor, replacing a resigning official. The job is controlled by the Department of Business and Economic Development.
