Second annual prairie burn at Goose Lake Prairie State Park

About 105 acres of prairie were burned today during the second annual burn at Goose Lake Prairie State Park. Park Ranger Joe Nyhoff said roughly 20 acres of restored prairie and a half mile strip were burned Monday to kill weeds, release nitrates, and promote seed set. Nyhoff noted the prairie should be 60 percent grass and 40 percent flowers, and burns help maintain balance. After the first burn, grass rose to 6 to 10 feet. The effort aims to preserve the prairie ecology, with assistance from area Park Rangers Dennis Bryant, Dave Carr, Gerry Benson, and staff from nearby parks.
