Saratoga school board approves salary increases

The Saratoga Community Consolidated School District 600 board, after an executive session, unanimously approved salary hikes for teachers, the principal Arden Wills, and superintendent Robert Chord. Highlights include a base teacher salary of 8000 plus 100 yearly fringe, an 11 month superintendent term with annual increases, and a transportation director plan with state 80 percent reimbursement. Resignations of two teachers were accepted and in-service days for conferences and institute time were set. The board noted space constraints for a hot lunch program and reviewed achievement test results, finding Saratoga scores align with county and national trends.

Mission Hills subdivision hearing continued to April 3

Morris Planning Commission kept public hearing on a 42.5 acre Mission Hills pre annexation and zoning petition, west of Lisbon Road, north of Harmon Acres, to April 3. Developers were asked for more engineering data and a sewer water facilities letter and to consider a Planned Unit Development.

Weather update forecasts sunshine and warmth ahead

The report notes mostly sunny skies today with a high in the mid 40s and a fair night with a low in the low 30s. Thursday is expected mostly sunny and warmer with a high in the lower 50s. Seneca Rural Fire District election set for April 10

Voters in the Seneca area will decide on a proposed Rural Fire District on Tuesday April 10 from 6 AM to 6 PM. Polling places are Milton Pope School in Miller Township for north of the Illinois River and Brookfield Town Hall for south of the river. Absentee ballots available from Lawrence Whalen at LaSalle County Courthouse Ottawa, with mail by April 5 and in person by April 7. ballots returned by April 9. The district spans parts of Grundy and LaSalle counties, including Erienna Vienna Norman Nettle Creek and Brookfield Miller Manlius townships. Joe Perry chairs the Seneca Community Fire Protection Association.

ICC hearing continued on Rock Island crossings to June

The Illinois Commerce Commission postponed a Tuesday hearing in Chicago on permanently closing the Brisbin Road crossing in Saratoga Township and delaying automatic signals at the Bungalow Gun Club and Ashley Road crossings. The session is rescheduled for June 20 at 10 a.m. No reason was provided by an ICC spokesman.

Supreme Court upholds local property taxes for schools

In a 5 to 4 ruling the Supreme Court allows local property taxes to finance public schooling, saying education is not an explicit or implicit constitutional right. The decision reverses a lower court stance that Texas' school financing violated the 14th Amendment and discriminated against the poor, with Justice Powell authoring the majority and Justice Marshall dissenting.

Yorkville Board Limits Free Bus to Distant Students

Yorkville Community Unit District will offer free bus transportation only to students living more than 1.5 miles from an attendance center starting next fall. About 30 students will be affected. within 1.5 miles students must cover costs. The district also approved a high school addition plan and new math courses, while announcing salary changes, resignations, and field-use grants for Little League.

AEC hearings continue on Seneca plant in Illinois

The Atomic Energy Commission began hearings on radiation aspects of Commonwealth Edison proposed nuclear plant in LaSalle County near Marseilles. The session faced initial delay as lawyer Joseph Karaganis objected to reading preliminary statements. hearings are expected to run through Wednesday.
