Morris City council approves park plan and appointments

The Morris City Council appointed Jay Heap to fill the unexpired ward two seat and approved negotiations with the Borens on selling Boren property for a community park near Illinois 47 and George St. Bolt plans include a lighted ballpark. The Borens seek 120000 plus rezoning of land east of Newton Dr and contract sale terms. The council also awarded a sewer project contract of 227968.70 and arranged funding from a federal grant. March 19 was set for a public meeting on water and treatment rates.

Former Grundy County Sheriff John E. G. Olson Dies

John E. G. Olson 70 of 747 Fremont Ave. Morris died at Morris Hospital at 4 45 a m He served as sheriff from 1954 to 1962 and had been deputy since 1938 He married Lorene Gulley in 1969 and is survived by his wife two step daughters a half sister and other relatives Funeral services are pending at Davis Funeral Home

Drainage concerns raised over cooling lake project

Francis Halpin of South Wilmington questioned the Grundy County Board about bringing 53 extra square miles of water from Commonwealth Edison cooling lake plans in northeast Kankakee County. He fears drainage of his Essex-area farm could be impeded by a nearby 4,900 acre lake, with a 14 foot dike, amid construction for a nuclear station at Braidwood.

Jay Heap appointed Morris alderman youngest in history

Jay M Heap age 20 of 201 Nettletown Dr became Morris youngest alderman after filling the vacancy from George Malek’s resignation. He finished second in the Feb 27 second ward Republican primary with 187 votes to winner Donald Barkley’s 298, Edwin F Sobol with 58. Heap, a Morris Community High School graduate, attended Joliet Junior College, Western Illinois University, is divorced, and lives with his 23 month old son Trent. He works as a distributor for Cities Service Co and aims to close the generation gap by fostering growth.

Coal City approves Woods Subdivision first addition

The Coal City Village Board approved a 10 acre preliminary plat for the first addition to Woods Subdivision southwest of Coal City. Michael Franzen and Robert Keener own the land, plans call for single family homes, with development possible within three months.

Coal City district OKs ISU study on school system

Monday night the Coal City Community Unit No. 1 Board authorized a staff led evaluation by Illinois State University with costs $1,800 to $2,500 to review system goals population trends curriculum administration facilities and finances. The plan targets a Sept. 1 completion if work begins around May 1 and will address state requirements along with 10 year project outlook.

Coal City Kindergarten Enrollment Dates Updated

Rogers Cumming Coal City grade school principal says kindergarten registration dates will be announced soon. An earlier Coal City Notes item in Morris Daily Herald incorrectly listed enrollment as Thursday and Friday for Coal City. those dates were for Gardner Grade School registrations.

Weather Outlook With Warmer Trend And Storms

Increasing cloudiness and warmer today with a high in the mid 60s. Tonight showers and thunderstorms, windy and warmer, low near mid 50s. Wednesday showers and storms end by morning then sun, windy and mild with highs mid to upper 60s. Monday reached 52 at Dresden Island Locks and Dam with a 35 low, 7 am at 39, Morris downtown 57 at 11 am.

Seek to identify 6th fire victim in East Chicago blaze

East Chicago officials sought to identify the sixth victim of a two story apartment fire in Indiana Harbor district. Police already identified five bodies and said all residents were accounted for by late Monday night.

City seeks park lease details for Stratton and Gebhard Woods

Representatives for Morris met with Illinois Department of Conservation official Lee Osborn at the Holiday Inn to discuss leasing Stratton State and Gebhard Woods State parks. The preliminary gathering included Mayor Hendrickson and others, as Osborn outlined a four year lease framework and future information needs.
