Park proposal discussed for Morris region by state official

A state plan to lease Gebhard Woods and William G. Stratton parks to Morris faces initial discussion Monday at 11:30 a.m. between an Illinois Department of Conservation representative and Mayor John Hendrickson. John Warren clarified no proposal exists yet and any ideas would be informal talks pending future formal decisions.

Indians Reach In Principle Accord At Wounded Knee

The Justice Department said the government has reached an agreement in principle with militant Indians at Wounded Knee South Dakota to end the 11 day occupation of the historic village but noted that procedures remain to be worked out. No immediate word came from the Indians or officials of the Justice and Interior departments involved in the talks.

Illinois 47 over I-55 overpass awarded contract

The Illinois Department of Transportation awards a $1,548,864 contract to Orr Construction Co. for a grade separation and bridge carrying Illinois 47 over Brewster Run near Dwight. The project is part of 18 awarded totaling $15.1 million. bids opened February 8. The item includes all approaches.

SWEB Sanitary District Approves Sewage Plant Funding

The South Wilmington East Brooklyn SWEB Sanitary District met Thursday night and approved an ordinance dedicating about 900000 dollars for a sewage treatment plant. District members passed the measure at a meeting held in the South area.

Kusper Succeeds Barrett as County Clerk in Interim Change

Stanley T. Kusper chairman of Chicago's election board was chosen to succeed convicted County Clerk Edward J. Barrett. The Cook County Board of Commissioners met in emergency session and selected Kusper by an 8 to 4 vote. He will serve interim until the next election. Barrett, 72, had served five terms. George W. Dunne called the meeting after State's Attorney Bernard Carey's advice that the clerk's office be vacant due to Barrett's conviction. Kusper, 37, joined the election board in 1961, became chief attorney, and was named chairman Sept. 17, 1969. He earns $28,000 yearly. The text notes prior vote-fraud concerns involving election judges. The passage also lists local budget figures and personnel changes for unrelated district matters.

Testimony on microwave ovens raises safety standard question

New York eye doctor Dr Milton M Zaret told the Senate Commerce Committee that safe exposure standards for microwave ovens cannot be set. AHAM argued ovens are safe with proper use and current federal rules are adequate. Consumers Union cited leaks in 15 models and urged against purchase.

Minooka unit school approves calendar change and bus bid

The Minooka High School Board approved calendar changes adding emergency days to Easter Vacation from April 19 to April 27 and moving May 31 to a teachers workday. Graduation remains June 4, with report cards issued that day. The new 1973 74 calendar starts August 23 and ends June 3. Bus bids open. low bid from E M Bailey & Sons for a complete unit with Bluebird body on an International chassis at 9250 dollars, pending specs.

Weather Outlook With Showers and Cooler Temperatures

A cloudy cooler day with occasional rain and a high near 45. Tonight brings more rain with a low around 38. Saturday forecasts show showers and a few thunderstorms with a high near 50. Earlier Thursday the Dresden Island Locks and Dam reached 57 degrees with a 32 degree low. At 7 am today the temperature was 45 degrees.

Board to hear about drainage at Grundy meeting

Grundy County officials announce agenda for Tuesday's County Board session in the courthouse. Francis Halpin of Greenfield Township will discuss drainage problems related to the new Commonwealth Edison power plant. A zoning ordinances discussion is planned, and Mrs. Everett Lois of the Grundy County Historical Society will speak on the bi centennial program.

The Morris Community High School Concert Band presents The World's Greatest Sound System at 4 p.m. Sunday March 18 in the gym. Court Awards Custody of 3 Year Old Amy Huebert

An El Paso County District Court judge awarded custody of 3 year old Amy Huebert to her adoptive parents for the present. Judge John Gallagher cited Amy's age and risk of harm from a transfer. Visitation was assigned to her natural mother Paula Marshall and her other daughter Erica. All parties were deemed fit and privacy was prioritized.
