Kusper Succeeds Barrett as County Clerk in Interim Change
Stanley T. Kusper chairman of Chicago's election board was chosen to succeed convicted County Clerk Edward J. Barrett. The Cook County Board of Commissioners met in emergency session and selected Kusper by an 8 to 4 vote. He will serve interim until the next election. Barrett, 72, had served five terms. George W. Dunne called the meeting after State's Attorney Bernard Carey's advice that the clerk's office be vacant due to Barrett's conviction. Kusper, 37, joined the election board in 1961, became chief attorney, and was named chairman Sept. 17, 1969. He earns $28,000 yearly.
