Two weeks from Monday, March 21, marks first day to file petitions with the county clerk for the June 14 primary. The eight day period ends March 28, with filings opening at 8 a.m. Names appear on party ballots in filing order.
Grundy County 4-H members start a six session program titled You Buy Clothing to learn shopping for others and self. Speakers cover grooming posture etiquette and wardrobe care with field trips to Joliet stores and local shops.
The Morris Lincoln Nursing Home opening is delayed as furniture shipments run late. Owners Mr and Mrs Kaszuba said the building and interior finish are complete and they hope to open March 1 once furnishings arrive and patients can be received.
Morris Grade School Board of Education proposes a $1,400,000 bond issue to fund long range growth needs after a 1965 census shows rising enrollments. Surveys indicate strongest growth south of the Illinois River and west of the city. projected 1969 70 enrollment rises to about 1 581 from 1 286.
The driver's license of James E. Comrie of 250 West Division Street Coal City has been suspended by Secretary of State Paul Powell in Springfield after three moving traffic violation convictions.
The forecast calls for windy cloudy and colder conditions with snow flurries. Temperatures drop from the mid 30s to the low 20s tonight with a high near 30 Saturday and partly cloudy cold Sunday. At Collins Weather Station the day opened at 33 degrees after a high of 55 earlier.
Heavy rainfall and snowmelt caused a rise in the Illinois River affecting areas east of Morris. Dresden Island Lock and Dam reached flood stage around 5 a.m. with warnings issued to Sheriff Olson to relay to farmers along the river. In Morris the river stood at 12.20 feet at 10 a.m. and was expected to rise above flood stage later. Precipitation recorded near Morris was .59 inch and .75 inch at Collins Station, with hail reported overnight.
The second in a series of weekly Lenten services will be held at 8 p m this Sunday at St Thomas Episcopal Church. The Rev Harold Dude will preach scripture read by the Rev Roy Hamburger prayers by the Rev Arthur Johns and officiating by the Rev David Zimmerman. Offerings support the Vacation Bible School program for next summer. Cooperating churches include First Methodist First United Presbyterian First Baptist and Episcopal churches.
A pink and white girl's bicycle with chrome fenders and a basket was found this morning in front of Hornsby's downtown store and taken to the police station. Police Chief Donald Ward identified the bike and said it will be held as found property.
A DC8 jet of Canadian Pacific Airlines crashed during foggy approach at Tokyo International Airport. Police report 56 dead of 71 aboard, six missing presumed dead, nine survivors. Notable victims include ABC executive Jesse Zousmer and his wife. The aircraft, Flight 402 from Hong Kong to Vancouver, struck lights and a seawall, scattering wreckage along the runway. Rescue efforts faced heavy obstacles amid a crowded, fatal scene. Additionally, Tokyo had seen another major crash a month earlier near Tokyo Bay.
Funeral services for Richard A. Marshall 19 of Riverside California killed in Viet Nam on February 21 will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in Davis Funeral Home with Rev. Roy Gallington officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery. He is a Morris native and son of Paul D. and the late Mrs Marshall. Survivors include brother Michael in the Navy two sisters Vicki and Penny and grandmother Mrs Frank Stevens of Ottawa along with Morris area uncles.
The Morris Grade School Papooses move to the state event as the sectional runner up after Washington Grade School forfeits. They will play Monmouth on Saturday at 6 15 p.m. in Canton with a potential second round at 7 30 p.m. Monday against the winner of Normal and Warrensburg.
Rescue crews comb rural areas east of Jackson for victims after a violent Mississippi tornado outbreak that left 57 dead statewide. In Jackson 12 died at Candlestick Park shopping center and a church collapse, with 411 injured statewide. Alabama reported one death, 11 hurt.
