An early morning bomb exploded in the Capitol interior, apparently a political bombing tied to opposition to the Laos invasion. The blast caused extensive damage to the Senate wing but there were no injuries, according to Senate Republican Leader Hugh Scott.
Joliet man David Pulley 43 faces formal escape charges after being indicted for armed robbery and attempted murder by a Will County Grand Jury. He was returned to Silver Cross Hospital Joliet after a Saturday escape from a hospital room and later surrendered near a Chicago suburb tavern. The case stems from a Dec 19 shootout with Joliet Police Officer Frederick Hafner during an armed robbery at Lewis Service Store.
Secretary Volpe urged continued funding for two SST prototype flights as opposition warned of dire impacts. He noted ten years and 1.1 billion invested, with test flights slated for 1973 and a House vote on further funding possible within two weeks.
The Massachusetts case asks if a 91 year old law banning distribution of birth control to unmarried people can be enforced after a prior circuit ruling found it conflicts with fundamental rights. The court will hear the appeal next fall with a decision due by June 1972.
Harlan Bane announced plans for the Chicago Joliet Livestock Marketing Center east of I 55 in Channahon Township Will County to open by August 1972 with a 228 000 square foot cattle building and a 75 000 square foot hog center. The facility will handle cattle hogs and sheep and aim to double Chicago stockyard receipts by 1972.
A public hearing at Crest Hill Village Hall 7:30 p.m. Tuesday will review proposed combined rest area and state police headquarters on Interstate 55 a half mile south of U S 30. Sigmund CC Ziejewski Elgin District No 1 Division of Highways announced the session and said interested parties may present opinions and ask questions. Headquarters for District No 5 State Police serves Grundy County.
David Morrow age 42 of Joliet was sentenced to 7 to 10 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter in the fatal beating of Ester Williams 35 of Lockport. Williams was found beaten at a Lockport playground on October 4 1970. A Circuit Court jury convicted Morrow on January 28 and Judge Michael Orenie imposed the sentence.
Voters in Pontiac and neighboring townships rejected the creation of a Pontiac Area Airport Authority by 2 401 to 506. The plan would have allowed taxes for operation and bonds to fund a $600 000 all weather airport with a hard surface runway and facilities for industrial planes.
Otis White 54 of Morris was hospitalized in fair condition after a collision on Minooka Road near the high school at 4 10 p m Saturday. Pillar 48 of Route 2 the truck driver was treated and released. White faced a ticket for improper lane usage and will appear in court March 18.
Mrs. Norval Galloway of 830 E North St and Mrs. Ronald Bell of Wauponsee Township filed petitions for three year terms on the Morris Grade School Board of Education. Galloway joined at 8 30 a m and Bell at 9 45 a m bringing candidates to three. Gordon Lear and Mrs Bell seek second terms while Mrs Keith Bartlett holds a partial term. Three board vacancies will be filled at the April 10 election. At 10 45 a m no petitions had been filed for Morris Community High School vacancies.
The Illinois Pollution Control Board schedules a 10:30 a.m. hearing on March 19 at Seneca City Hall regarding E I DuPont de Nemours and Co. request for a variation to permit open burning of explosive wastes at the Seneca Works.
