Morris Library Board sets March 10 as completion date for the new library. City attorny will mail a notice to general contractors Thorsen and Thorsen. Negotiations cover carpeting, landscaping, gravel fill, and cleaning equipment for the new building.
The Minooka Village Board approved a new ordinance adding three license classes for alcohol sales. Class A and B fees rise to 750 and 500 dollars with limited licenses per 1 000 residents. Class C remains unlimited. Truck expenses for water and sewers rise to 980 annually retroactive to 1971. Vehicle 91 honored for George Bauer. Next meetings set for March 22 and April 6.
President Nixon unveils six revenue sharing messages proposing $500 million for crime fighting and justice system upgrades. Funds would be distributed by the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration with $425 million for state chosen block grants and $75 million for projects approved by the SEAA, with no major federal spending controls.
Incumbent William Stangland filed a petition to run in the April 10 election for Morris Community High School Board. Three seats will expire for Louis Berger Dr Hugo Avalos and Stangland, who was appointed to complete Ronnie Sampson’s term. For Morris Elementary School Board Gordon Lear Mrs Ronald Bell and Mrs Norval Galloway filed petitions while Mrs Keith Bartlett, appointed after Waldo Bolen Jr.’s resignation, took out a petition.
Capitol Police leaders told a Senate inquiry heightened guards and restricted access could improve security around the Capitol after the bombing. The Weather Underground claimed responsibility in a letter mailed from Elizabeth New Jersey, as damage topped three hundred thousand dollars and the building underwent checks for clues.
Grant brothers Rodney and Benny and partner Ken Meyers plan a mid March opening at the Liberty and Main St corner. They bring 34 year old Meyers and decades in wholesale and local furniture trade to offer bedroom focused furnishings with display by an interior decorator. The 4,000 square foot corner site will use 1,600 square feet for storage.
The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that a person cannot be imprisoned merely for being unable to pay fines. The decision affects indigent defendants nationwide and stems from Preston A. Tate of Houston who served time to work off 425 dollars in traffic fines. The court also limited federal highway through parks and opened divorce courts to poor filers.
Mrs. Ralph Vivian Fischer a retired Gardner Grade School teacher and Illinois Valley TEPS commissioner chair will attend a Springfield conference April 24 to draft a Self-Governance or Professional Practices Act for possible introduction. She has chaired local meetings and leads IEENE and LERNE activities with John Overbeck and Jane Davies attending Chicago discussions.
Patrons can borrow books for four months during the Morris Public Library move this month and next. Books checked out at temporary quarters will be returned to the new library by the scheduled checkout dates, according to librarian Mrs Gordon Gregg.
A lighthearted note describes a broken matchmaking computer emitting a final insult printout reading Out Of Ardor. The quip presents a whimsical tech mishap with a punny twist.
Grundy County deputies investigate a break in at Richards Apartments where the front door was forced open but nothing missing. Two hydraulic cylinders stolen at Verona, possibly late December or early January. A motor and a green steel duck boat were stolen from different locations. A bull was shot and killed on the former George Lee farm. Sheriff Olson and Chief Deputy Button responded.
A federal grand jury indicted W A Tony Boyle president of the United Mine Workers on 13 counts including conspiracy embezzlement and illegal political contributions totaling 49250. Also named were John Owens and James Kmetz with related conspiracy and funding charges.
Peter Sonnenfeld of the Department of Local Government Affairs will address the Morris Planning Commission at 7 30 p m in City Hall to discuss planning assistance and a fee quotation from General Planning and Resource Consultants of Glen Ellyn for next year. President Gerwin Rohrbach will attend as the consultants’ contract expires April 1.
Rain was expected in the southern part of the state and to evolve into snow across the central area. Forecasters predicted several inches of accumulation in the midstate and an overnight snow chance in the northeast with temperatures dropping to the 20s. Monday high at Dresden Island Locks and Dam was 40 with a 23 low, and morning readings ranged from 25 at 7 am to 29 in downtown Morris by 10:30 am.
