County coroner W. Clark Davis urged action on drownings in strip mine pits. The Board of Supervisors, after two days, said no workable solution emerged. Coal company reps called policing 33 000 acres of private land impractical and offered cooperation.
Morris Grade School Board reports four teaching vacancies as supply dwindles after tours of Illinois and Iowa colleges. Insurance policy transferred to Reserve Life. premiums set at 1.50. Willard Olson reappointed as school treasurer. Students’ achievement test scores run eight months above national average, with scores up from last year. Saratoga annexation area noted as not fully matching city boundaries. Continued on Page 5.
A sudden shower hit Morris Wednesday evening with thundershowers overnight. Early today gauges showed Pyatt station at .87 inches, Lisbon road at 1.11 inches, and a south city unofficial gauge at 1.60 inches. Additional showers and storms were forecast to continue this afternoon with clearing tonight, then fair and warm Friday with showers again by Saturday.
The Commercial Telegraphers Union began counting votes today by traffic employees at The Associated Press. Workers were asked to authorize a strike over a wage dispute after a contract expired at midnight and was extended twice to midnight tonight. About 650 employees are involved.
William S. Girard, 71, an Army specialist third class, says the Far East Command is pressuring him regarding his shooting of a Japanese woman. In taped Ottawa talks with his brother, he denies specific agents and says the pressure is from the whole command, not from any individual. His fiancée Haru Sueyama and mother Dorothy Girard are handling marriage arrangements and legal papers.
Navy officials described the incident as isolated and not likely to lead to major repercussions. A carrier Hornet aircraft on a routine training flight was fired on by a Communist Chinese shore battery about eight miles west of its plotted position in the Formosa Strait and damaged slightly.
Nationalist forces report delivering bags of rice and propaganda to Communist areas while Communist artillery shells hit Quemoy Island off the coast. The Nationalist air force said it dropped rice and leaflets on Fukien and Kwangtung to aid the mainland during a poor harvest year.
Japanese police say Victor Nickel of Inkster Michigan told authorities that Specialist 3/e William Girard tossed empty shell casings on a U S Army range at the urging of Girard before a Japanese woman scrap collector was shot Jan 30. The statement appears in a secret police file though not in court records where Girard faces charges carrying up to 15 years. The United States protests Girard's transfer for trial in Japan amid ongoing legal actions.
The Daily Telegraph reports Britain can produce one megaton H bomb per month and, in addition, can turn out at least one and probably several ordinary atomic bombs per week.
Nikita Khrushchev rejected Western proposals for disarmament control and nuclear weapon production as a screen for continuing the arms race. He offered to accept international inspection posts in the USSR, the United States, Britain and others if they aid a test ban agreement. The remarks came at a two hour news conference in Helsinki during the London talks on disarmament.
A 40 foot steel column was set at the Dresden Nuclear Power station in Grundy county to begin construction of the nation s largest reactor. Gov Stratton, Willis Gale and Francis K McCune joined in tightening the bolt as 400 officials watched. Groundbreaking signals 20 columns to support a 190 foot sphere with completion expected in 1960.
