Jimmy Dorsey Dies Today at Age of 53

New York bandleader Jimmy Dorsey, 53, died at Doctors Hospital after a month of treatment for cancer and a prior lung operation. Brother of Tommy Dorsey, he formed a famed duo and later their joint orchestra. Born February 29 1904 in Shenandoah PA, he rose from coal camps to jazz stardom, with a noted feud and eventual reunion. His divorce in 1949 ended with one daughter, Julie Hilton.

Morris Community High hires art teacher and rehires treasurer

The Morris Community High School board hired Miss Marjorie Zoch to teach three art classes and assist with the library and reappointed Willard E. Olson as school treasurer for another three-year term. Interviews continue for two vacant French and Spanish teaching positions. A letter from the Illinois Inspection Bureau reports water pressure of 460 gallons per minute after Morris activated all pumps.

Grundy County Horse Show To Be Sunday

The first annual Grundy County Horse Show sponsored by the Morris Knights of Columbus and Town and Country Riding Club will be held Sunday at Wakeman's Woods on Route 113, three miles east of Route 47. Events include registered quarter horse classes, neck reining, flag racing, western parade and pleasure classes, three and five gaited society horses, and children's pony classes. Lunch by KCs, mosquito spraying completed, pony rides for kids.

In Harlan Kentucky the City Council pressed Police Chief J H Forester for monthly reports. He blamed a lack of paper and office supplies. Councilman Ivan Staverman offered to buy a pad of paper and the chief agreed to resume reporting.

At Pyatt Weather Station Tuesday the high was 82 and the night low 64. At 9 am today the temperature was 68 with Friday expected to be clearing and cooler.

Board of Supervisors Adjourns To Attend Dresden Ceremonies

Grundy County board met briefly then adjourned to attend ceremonies at the Divacdoan Nuclear Power Station. Reports from Animal Disease committee show March and April brucellosis and tuberculosis infections across cattle and herds. A request from Texas-Illinois Natural Gas Pipeline Co. to cross roads for a new northward line was discussed but no action was taken.

Judge weighs soldier rights in case over Japanese trial

A federal judge in Washington considers whether William S. Girard, a 21 year old specialist, must be tried by a Japanese court or by an Army court martial. The judge kept in force an order barring delivery to foreign custody while arguments continue and sought citations to back claims that constitutional rights are being traded away.

Hoffman Becomes 13th District Circuit Judge

Newly elected Circuit Court Judge Leonard Hoffman received his commission from Governor Stratton and becomes an official circuit judge of the 13th Judicial District. He will preside Monday in Grundy County, vacating his prior Grundy County judge role as Kendall County Judge Robert J. Sears and three district judges assume duties until Hoffman's term ends in December 1958.
