Diamond bartender to face court over May tavern incident
A 27 year old Diamond bartender, John C. Anderson, was jailed after a May 14 fight at The Styx tavern. He was shot in the abdomen by a Coal City officer, later released on bond after appearing in court proceedings to hear the resisting or obstructing with a dangerous weapon charge. A second man, Dennis J. Travis, 21, of Braidwood, was treated for head wounds.

Bell strike looming as union seeks 25 percent pay raise
Washington AP reports AFL-CIO Communications Workers President Joseph Beirne warns a nationwide Bell System walkout could occur if bargaining stalls. The union requests a 25 percent wage jump from weekly wages of 101 dollars for women clerks to 193 dollars for central office workers. Bell offers 11 percent first year and 3 percent in the next two years plus cost of living pay. A nationwide vote is under way and results will be announced at the Kansas City convention next week.
