Plane crashes kill 77 in California and Connecticut
A Hughes Air West DC9 crashed in Angeles National Forest after colliding with a Marine F4 Phantom near Duarte California killing 48 aboard and 1 on the fighter. Nine bodies were found and one crew member survived. In New Haven a Allegheny Convair 580 with 29 aboard crashed on approach to Tweed Airport in dense fog. Reports vary on fatalities with up to 29 dead, many injuries, and cottages burned as flames and explosions followed the impact.

Newark youth drowns at club outing
A 15 year old Newark boy Billy Roy Robbins drowned Friday during an outing with two friends at the Newark Sportsmen's Club near Millington. He was pronounced dead at 6 26 p m by Kendall County Coroner Everett McKeown. An inquest will be held and the case is under investigation. Services were held at Larson-Gabel Funeral Home Newark with burial at Millington Newark Cemetery. Robbins was born July 29 1955 in Myrtle Mississippi and is survived by his parents four sisters and four brothers plus grandparents. Authorities at the scene included the Kendall County Sheriff's department Newark rescue squad Bristol Kendall fire squad and the state conservation department.
