Indictment of 3 in Grundy County murder attempt case

Circuit Judge William P. Denning appointed Public Defender George Black to represent Richard Vaughn Thiris Smith and a 15 year old juvenile in a 12 count indictment by the Grundy County Grand Jury. They face charges of attempt to commit murder armed robbery and aggravated assault in the July 9 throat slashing of a hitchhiker near Minooka.

Hold Knott on murder charge

Thomas Edward Knott 46 of Aurora bound over to the Kendall County grand jury after a preliminary hearing. Bond set at 75000 and he was released after posting. The case stems from the fatal beating of James L. Fiester whose body was found June 13 1972. Knott was taken into custody July 7 1973 and is represented by Roy Larwell.

Weather report with warm spell eases into next day

A mostly sunny day rises into the middle 80s with a slight warm trend. Tonight will be fair with a low in the lower 60s. Wednesday remains sunny and warm with highs in the upper 80s. Earlier, Monday topped 82 at Dresden Island Locks and Dam with a 58 low. morning readings reached 61 at 7 a.m. and 83 downtown by 11 a.m.

Budgetapproved for M-V-K District 2 1973-74

The seven member board approved the tentative 1973-74 budget for Mazon Verona Kinsman Community Unit District No. 2 totaling 732 210 in receipts and 731 400 in expenditures. A public hearing is set for Sept 10 at 8 p.m. in Mazon High School with budget on file for 30 days starting July 30.

Parking penalties deemed unenforceable by Morris officials

At a Morris City Council meeting City Attorney James Peacock said parking tickets and street sweeper violations cannot be legally enforced or raised for late payments. The committee urged action to improve ticket enforcement while discussions on cab franchises liquor licenses and a new endloader moved forward with financing options considered.
