Morris Community High names Kane head football coach

The Morris Community High School Board appointed Lawrence Kane of Nokomis Illinois as head football coach and head of the track team with basketball assistance at MCHS. Kane will join the physical education department and teach driving training, alongside hiring Lawrence Dergo as a PE instructor and assistant coach to be named later.

Chicago dormitory slayings labelled crime of the century

Eight student nurses were strangled and stabbed to death in a South Chicago Hospital dormitory. One survivor hid under a bed as police captured a suspect in downtown Chicago. Victims included Gloria Davy and seven Filipinos and Americans, with many bodies found upstairs. Coroner described the case as the crime of the century.

Tornado Passes Through Grundy Morris Counties With Damage

Severe tornadic clouds moved through Grundy and Morris counties causing minor damage reports. A lightning strike cut power to WRMI-FM briefly. transformers overheated in Morris, later cooled, five fans readied. Civil Defense tracked a Rockford tornado heading southeast. Heat wave deaths across several states rose to 106 with record highs in St. Louis and New York City. Weather officials warned of continued heat with scattered showers in parts of the nation.

Weather outlook with showers and warm temperatures

The U S Weather Bureau notes a cloudy cool night with occasional showers and thundershowers and a low in the mid 60s. Friday will be mostly cloudy with a high near 80. Saturday looks partly sunny and warmer. Collins Station logged 93 at Wednesday with 67 low. Morris reported 71 at 9 am and 80 at noon with .18 inch rain Wednesday evening.

Lack of Bids Delays Coal City Sewer Project

Coal City faces another delay in building a new sanitary sewer system as no sealed bids were received to install sewer lines. Only bids for the lift station and stabilization pond were filed but not opened, with openings postponed 60 to 90 days. The project, started after a December 1964 notice from the Illinois Sanitary Water Board, faces possible further extension beyond August 1, 1965, despite residents approving $800,000 in bonds in March 1965.

Changeable Cat Observed After Bite Incident

A large orange tomcat is under observation at Dr Frank Connors veterinary office after biting three year old Jamie Sandvik daughter of Reverend and Mrs James Sandvik. The cat arrived at 220 West Jefferson Street Tuesday and again Wednesday before biting Jamie at 830 PM. Police removed the cat and it escaped to Hi Way Inn area. Jamie received a booster shot from Dr Hugo Avalos. The cat will be observed for 10 days for rabies signs before owner can claim it.

Seven-Figure Local Dialing Starts Sunday in Morris Area

Wrong date corrected for Morris and nearby communities. Seven figure dialing becomes effective Sunday. Morris residents are unaffected as WH equals 94, but neighboring towns must dial seven digits within their area.

Washington AP Republican leaders urge a House inquiry into the government's dismissal of an antitrust suit against Anheuser-Busch after $10,000 in Democratic fund contributions. Atty Gen Katzenbach said dismissals were voluntary and not warranted prosecutions, while A. A. Busch Jr. called the charge preposterous.

Stevenson Freeway Markers Go Up Along U S 66

New markers designating the highway from Gardner to Bloomington as Stevenson Freeway are being erected at 10 mile intervals along U S 66 and Interstate 55. Gov. Otto Kerner designated the route in honor of Adlai E. Stevenson who died in London a year ago. Stevenson, Illinois governor in 1948 and Democratic presidential nominee in 1952 and 1956, was U S Ambassador to the United Nations at his death.

Special School Tax Approved by Morris Elementary Board

The Morris Elementary Board of Education approved a special tax levy up to five cents per $100 assessed to fund a working cash account for 1966-67. The fund aims to bridge building and educational needs, with a projected deficit this year of 16,506.52 from property purchases for expansion.
