A westbound train struck a semi-trailer on U.S. 66 near Dwight at 4 35 am. Paul Crabtree 35 of Lincoln failed to stop when signals flashed due to brake failure. The head brakeman Richard Ferren 31 of Kankakee was injured minor cuts and bruises. Trailer damage estimated at 10000 dollars.

Hunter remains critical after hunting incident

Steven W. Yuswak, 24, of 1819 South 56th St., Cicero, remained in critical condition this morning from a gunshot wound to the stomach suffered Sunday during a hunting trip with men from the Chicago area near the Lloyd Dean farm in Lisbon Township. The shot, reportedly from a .22 rifle while rabbit hunting, was treated at Morris Hospital by Davis Ambulance. Investigations are being conducted by the Kendall County Sheriff's Department, the Illinois Conservation Department, and the State Police. Authorities were notified at 10:45 a.m. Sunday.

Assessment supervisor to retire in Kendall County

LaVerne A. Hanson, Kendall County supervisor of assessments, will retire May 1 after nearly 32 years in the county office. He has served as deputy treasurer, county treasurer and county clerk, and since 1955 as supervisor of assessments. Applications for his successor, with a date by Feb 9, are being sought.

Newark voters set February 10 for second tax referendum

Newark Grade School District 66 will hold a second election on February 10 to consider a 30 cent increase in the educational tax, after a 92 cent current rate generated 115,637.50. The proposed 1.22 rate would add 37,707.87 but still leave a 21,701.42 deficit. Polls open noon to 7 p.m. at the Newark Grade School.

Set Piche hearing Feb. 7

Preliminary hearing for Betty F. Piche 30 of Somonauk in Kendall County Circuit Court Yorkville is reset for February 7 at 10 a.m. The charges include five counts of murder and one each of armed robbery and theft tied to the December 29 Pine Village Steak House killings north of Yorkville. Her hearing was postponed after a witness could not appear. Carl Reimann’s preliminary hearing was held Thursday.
