Cut farm subsidy programs in Nixon budget plan

The Nixon budget cuts farm subsidies by more than a quarter starting July 1, reducing Rural Environmental Assistance Program funding to 10 million from 182.5 million and trimming overall farm and rural development spending by 1.1 billion. REA financing shifts to private investors at higher rates, emergency FHA loans are not reinstated, and some low income housing and disaster aid programs are ended while more affluent borrowing continues.

Viet Cong stalls credentials in four-way peace talks

In Saigon the Viet Cong delegation refused to present credentials at two sessions delaying the four party joint military commission. Hundreds more cease fire violations were reported nationwide. A third meeting was set as North Vietnamese officers were flown from Hanoi to Saigon for the talks. U S envoy Ellsworth Bunker intervened again to push progress. The sessions, the first face to face among the four parties, produced no outcomes.

First American Plane Lands in Hanoi Since 1964

Saigon reports an American military plane landed at Hanoi airport marking the first such landing since August 1964. North Vietnamese officials refused to disembark until customs forms were completed, reflecting contrasting responses by Viet Cong delegates and other North Vietnamese arrivals to Vietnamese paperwork requirements.

Fire kills 10 in Pleasantville elderly home

A fatal fire at Street's Nursing Home in Pleasantville New Jersey killed at least ten residents. Six escaped as firefighters reported the building a 50 year old two story wood frame structure. The alarm system failed though it had been inspected. Most victims were found in or near beds and initial indications point to a linen closet as the fire source.

Weather: chilly with sun and mixed notes in Morris region

Forecast calls for mostly sunny and cold today with a high in the upper 20s. Tonight remains fair and cold with low in the teens. Tuesday turns mostly cloudy and warmer with a mid 30s high. Two Chicago teens shot on platform two killed

Pierre Lyles 16 of Chicago and cousin Gene A. Robinson 16 of Union Pier Michigan were found shot on a South Side train platform as they waited for a train to take them home. Robinson died this morning. Lyles remains in critical condition at Billings Hospital. The boys, high school athletes at New Buffalo, were inseparable and had come to Chicago for a girlfriend’s surprise party.

The body of Edward G Robinson 79 the film star who died Friday in Hollywood was to be flown to New York for burial Private family services led by Rabbi Nathan Perrlman at Temple Emmanu El preceded burial in the Beth El Cemetery family Mausoleum Funeral services had been held Sunday at Temple Israel in Hollywood.

Three injured in three car crash on Division Street

A three vehicle collision on Division Street near the Kroger parking lot injured three people Sunday at 12:50 PM. Donald B. Rippetoe, 19, Joliet, was driving south and stopped for a left turn. Robert L. Johnson, 29, Joliet, failed to stop in time and was rear ended. Jerry Marx, 18, rural Verona, failed to slow and hit Johnson, causing Johnson to strike Rippetoe. Neck and spine injuries were reported for two victims, Debie Lindsay sustained a bump, and debris damaged three cars. Marx was cited for failure to reduce speed and will face court in February.
