Stennis Shot in Homefront Robbery in Washington

Sen John C Stennis was in very serious condition after being shot twice in an apparent street robbery outside his Washington home. Doctors described his condition as guarded with 71 year old Stennis conscious and resting, following 62 hours of surgery for wounds to the lower rib cage and left thigh. Police pursued two teenage suspects, 16 to 17, in the daylight case as Walter Reed detailed the operation and recovery timeline.

Five injured in Seneca police car crash near bridge

A Seneca police squad car collided with a 1966 Pontiac on the south approach to the Illinois River bridge at 9 50 p m Tuesday. Patrolman Charles Shockey and auxiliary Robert Constantine were in the squad, with five people treated at Morris Hospital including Susan Gage 15 Dale Mosier 32 Thomas Anderson 24 and Miss Gage listed fair to guarded while Shockey Constantine and Constantine released. The squad car 1970 Plymouth suffered heavy front end and side damage and was towed from Stafford's Garage. the Pontiac had about 2 000 in damage and was removed by Penoyer Garage.

Grundy County APO Seen As Promising For HUD Certification

Judge upholds 1973 racing dates in Illinois

In Chicago AP report Judge Robert Downing upheld the Illinois Racing Board allocations of December for 1973 thoroughbred and harness racing dates. The ruling covered two suits, one by Attorney General William J. Scott and another by Arlington Park Washington Park Race Tracks Corp. The decision comes after a new Racing Board took office under Governor Daniel Walker.

Local man injured in Route 66 crash near Illinois 116

Osmond Bjelland age 44 of Patterson Drive Route 1 suffered multiple fractures and was listed in fair condition at St. James Hospital Pontiac after a 9:45 am crash on U S 66 three and a half miles south of Illinois 116. He failed to stop for a southbound state truck driven by Francias Cashmer 52 of Route 1 Pontiac. Bjelland’s truck van collided with Cashmer’s vehicle. Cashmer uninjured. Damage estimated 1200 to Bjelland vehicle and 50 to the state truck. Bjelland cited for driving too fast for conditions.

Michigan teen in critical condition after Chicago cousin shot

Two 16 year olds were wounded in a mystery shooting with the cousin killed and the other victim Gene A. Robinson Jr. dying. Steven W. Yuswak 24 of Cicero improved slightly after a gunshot wound. Police have no leads or suspects. no robbery motive or gang ties found. Circuit Judge Malmquist ordered jurors to appear in March.
