Enclaves Targeted as U S Forces Attack Viet Cong Strongholds

U S warplanes flew over 400 combat missions against Viet Cong sites in South Viet Nam while seven U S destroyers fired 729 shells. Ground fighting yielded few breakthroughs as Marines patrolled Da Nang vicinity and Viet Cong mortars hit the base. The cease fire ended and allied offensives resumed with higher casualties on both sides and propaganda campaigns to sway defections.

Greek English Teacher to Observe at Morris High School

Panayiotis Orphanidis a teacher of English from Greece arrives at Morris Community High School this afternoon for a two week observation. He travels with twelve fellow educators in a program by the Illinois State Superintendent and the United States International Teacher Program and will stay with Mr and Mrs Ward Sisler who host at MCHS. He will be available to speak to local organizations during his stay.

Morris Hospital Association elects eight new directors and trustees

Four directors and four trustees were elected to three year terms at the Morris Hospital Association annual meeting held Monday night. New directors are Wade McKeen Mrs. Donald Caisley Earl Hunt all of Morris and Mrs John Fillman of Mazon. Replacements for trustees include James McElwain Jack Strobel and Wilbur Finfrock with Maurice Burkhart of Mazon as the sole re elected trustee.

Eight to Attend GOP Conference in Springfield

Eight Republicans from Grundy County will attend a party conference Friday and Saturday in Springfield. Atty S J Holderman, county GOP chairman, released the list of delegates including James A Yatuni, Arthur Bozue Jr, Roy Helling, Henry Johnston, H Lea Wilkinson, Wilbur Brown, and Morris committeemen, with State's Atty Richard Wilder to attend.

Kentucky Enacts Civil Rights Measure First in Deep South

Gov. Breathitt will sign Kentucky's new civil rights law at the Capitol, claiming a historic step forward. The measure bans racial discrimination in public accommodations and jobs, takes effect July 1, and is broader than the federal act, with limited exceptions for small private venues.

Two Injured After Two Car Crash On Main Street

A Tuesday 5:10 p.m. collision on Main Street near Spruce Street left Susan Darlington and Zola Darlington with injuries. Gloria Darlington, 18, drove the westbound 1959 Ford. Richard A. Dite, 29, drove eastbound. Both cars skidded on ice and collided, causing vehicle damage. It is unknown if medical treatment was sought.

Permits Revoked After Magazine Solicitors Visit

Police Chief Donald Ward revoked permits after Morris residents complained about three magazine solicitors who were picked up on Chapin Street around 1 p.m. by City Policeman William Button and Deputy Sheriff George Hendrickson. Ward had issued permits Tuesday to two men. a third man claimed to be helping. He cited dissatisfaction but gave no details on the alleged wrongdoing.

Johnson proposes $2.3 billion for city rebuilding program

President Johnson asked Congress for a six year federal aid plan to rebuild selected American cities on a large scale. The program would fund housing, renewal, transportation, education and welfare, with grants up to 80 percent of nonfederal costs and planning funds of 12 million to start.

Striking Union Members at Des Plaines Chemical Plant

The International Chemical Workers Union at Des Plaines Chemical Co. east of town shows 42 members on strike after walking off Tuesday. Few members were at work as others avoided crossing the picket line. The strike is illegal and unsanctioned by the international union, officials say. Local 732 officers urge return to work. The plant operates with supervisory staff while the three-year contract remains in its first year.
