Abandoned Mexicans Found Near Gardner
State authorities sought the truck driver of a broken down vehicle that left 27 Mexican citizens stranded near Gardner on Interstate 55. Twenty three were found in the trailer and four others walking, after paying 250 dollars each for United States jobs. They had no water or sanitation during a two day trip from Texas, Idaho plated truck, awaiting migration officials in Joliet.

Prisoner Granted $10,000 Bond After Stolen Car Arrest
Paul G. Meister 23 of Champaign and formerly Morris faced a $10,000 bond for tampering with a motor vehicle theft of gasoline and marijuana possession after he was nabbed within hours of release on bail from Grundy County Jail. He allegedly stole a 1971 Electra Buick, then was caught at Interstate 55 and U.S. 30.

Donald Ward of 1034 Kiersted St. is an Illinois police figure with memberships in the Illinois Police Association and Police Benevolent and Protective Association. A 1934 Odell High School graduate, he worked for Stephen Lumber and Fuel (1941 1953) and joined the department as an extra policeman in 1951. He became permanent on May 1 1953, acted as chief after B O Neal Enger retired Jan 1 1964, was police chief from May 1 1964 to May 1 1970, married to Mardelle Whiteside with two children Jerry and Judy and three grandchildren. He is a member of the Rainbow Council Boy Scouts health and safety committee and First United Methodist Church.

Electrical wiring is suspected as the fire origin at a two story frame house in Vienna Township near Seneca. Six Donald Partridge family members were left homeless after about three hours of firefighting by Seneca Morris Mazon and Verona departments. Damage to contents is estimated at 8000 to 10000 dollars with only some furniture and silverware saved. The home, over a century old, was occupied by Marguerite Slattery and Edward Kelly. authorities said the blaze started in the master bedroom area and spread through walls and false ceilings.
