Weekend weather blanketed much of the United States with frigid temperatures and heavy snow. Grundy County saw subzero readings and a high of 12 degrees Sunday, while Eastern states faced a major winter storm leaving fatalities, power outages, and widespread travel disruption.
Air India Boeing 707 with 117 aboard crashes on Mont Blanc near La Tournette in Chamonix France. No survivors reported though helicopter crews search. 106 passengers and 11 crew were aboard, including Dr Homi J Bhabha.
President Johnson weighs resuming bombing of North Vietnam amid mixed views from officials and military leaders. Rusk cautions on safety while not signaling a stance. Ike King, 59, of 731 Third Ave., escaped serious injury when his 1963 Rambler slid on ice on Ness Honey Farm Road east of Morris. The car rolled into a four foot ditch after spinning and hitting a rut. King crawled out rear window and rode back with Hansen wrecker to seek medical exam. Vehicle heavily damaged.
Two Mexican nationals aged 31 and 23 were brought by Trooper John Pal to the county jail for questioning on illegal entry into the United States. They were arrested after a traffic stop on Interstate 55 and the Braceville Road access road near a controlled access highway. They had no money for bond while awaiting word from the Mexican Consulate in Chicago.
U S and South Vietnamese forces renew major search and destroy missions as the 34 day Allied truce lapses. Air strikes target a Viet Cong camp 35 miles southwest of Saigon with 199 possible enemy dead reported.
President Johnson sent a 112.8 billion budget request to Congress for 1967 the largest in history signaling possible further tax increases if Vietnam war costs rise. He warned of inflation risks from defense and Great Society spending while aiming for a near balance and a smaller deficit.
Grundy County endured a severe cold spell as Collins Weather Station logged 12 with a 5 below low on Sunday. Saturday reached 30/0 and tonight should rise to five above to zero with a 20 degree high on Tuesday and light snow possible.
