Bizarre extortion ends in triple death near Grandin
A Grandin, Missouri banker, 43, his wife, and daughter were found dead near an abandoned farm five miles west of town. Police traced a chilling extortion plot after the man warned his employer that a hazardous material was under his shirt and that his family was being held. All three victims were found bound to small trees in kneeling positions.

Plano accident kills youth
Jackie Moore 17 of Paw Paw was killed at 12 25 am when his car failed to negotiate a curve on Main St Road near Plano. He was thrown from the car after the vehicle left the road and rolled over. Deputy reports basal skull fracture as probable cause. A passenger, Thomas R Hallmark 17 of Earlville, was treated and released. Moore was home on leave from the Marine Corps. His body was taken to Torman Funeral Home in Paw Paw.

Fire damages restroom at Sparkle Laundromat in Coal City
Fire of undetermined origin damaged a restroom and storage area at the Sparkle Laundromat on E Division St in Coal City. Firemen arrived after a 3 45 a m call by a passing motorist and kept the blaze confined to the back of the building. Laundry equipment was not burned though heavy smoke was present. Firemen remained at the scene about an hour as investigators looked into the cause.
