Coal City Community Unit District No.1 considers changing how absences are recorded and reported. Superintendent Highsmith and High School Principal DeGulie push for teacher access to excuse status and pre arranged absences while noting rising absenteeism.
Morris City Council approved annexation of a 3.0 acre parcel just north of the Standard Station at Illinois 47 and Interstate 80. The owners, via Atty. Eugene Hayes, seek B IL zoning for a 40 room motel. Council also authorized Shakey Bridgeland purchase, bids for garbage disposal, a new squad car, and planned road frontage work.
Four Coal City Village Commissioners voted to increase full time village employees pay by 50 per month retroactive to the year's first pay period. Police officers now earn 625 monthly and the sergeant 650. Hourly laborers rise from 2.50 to 3.50 per hour. The board also discussed remodeling the city garage for a future library and approved pumping repairs at a well for 4779. Fines totaling 445 were reported for December. A Christmas tree disposal plan was approved with Jan 26 27 pickup days to aid the Coal City Area Club. Meeting adjourned shortly before 9:30 p.m.
Herbert Townsend age 30 of Lockport died from a bullet wound suffered in a restaurant shooting Sunday night. His father Hicks Townsend 52 was treated for an arm wound and James Beamon 38 of Lockport surrendered and faces two counts of attempted murder with a $20 000 bond set. Beamon fired at the Townsend men in the Joliet Lockport restaurant area. No motive is known.
Mostly cloudy and cold tonight with a chance of snow flurries and lows around 20. Wednesday brings more clouds and a chance of snow with highs in the upper 20s. Dresden Island Locks and Dam reported a high of 29 and a low of 10. At 7 am Morris downtown registered 19 degrees and at 7:30 am 22 degrees.

The Grundy County Board of Supervisors approved the March term grand jurors listed by township including Highland Roy Harty, Vienna Joyce Roe, Norman Maxine Burroughs, Brien na Alvin Johnson, Nettle Creek Howard Thorson, and others. Charges of grand theft were dismissed against Ronald Palmer, 35, of Greenbelt Maryland, in the bombing case that injured William Barr in 1970. Judge Michael Orenic ruled lack of evidence. Barr did not seek re election to the General Assembly.
Wilmington police confirmed the youth Frank Garth Jr. was found in the river area where he disappeared after ice skating Saturday night. Four divers had planned a second search as a helicopter offered by Brown & Lambercht Earthmovers was considered to aid the effort. Fire units and nearby towns assisted, with dynamite charges used to create a water channel three miles north of Wilmington. The depth near the disappearance ranged from eight to ten feet, with deeper sections about 20 feet farther along.
The Grundy County Board of Supervisors moved to study and report back on expanding professional planning by Carl Gardner and Associates for a county wide comprehensive plan. A six month survey covering nine planning aspects was proposed, with state funds likely available mid year for communities with such plans.
Morris Planning Commission urges widening U S 6 Bedford Road west of Illinois 47 to four lanes. A letter to Illinois Highways District Engineer Robert Blasius cites 1998 traffic projections, area development, traffic lights, and Ottawa Street extension as factors increasing left turns and through traffic. It asks for further study and consideration of the change.
Nuclear physicist George S. Stanford urged the Illinois Pollution Control Board to require additional trapping and holdup devices at Commonwealth Edison Dresden 3 to lower airborne radioactivity from the Morris plant. He testified the extra safety measures would cost about 1 million dollars amortized over 40 years and likely raise electricity bills by less than 1 percent.
Kenneth Hammer superintendent of Morris Grade School District No. 54 is reported to be improving satisfactorily at Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago after bladder surgery last week. He is starting to eat a little and is in Room 502.
