New Caterpillar Contract Rejected by Joliet Union
Caterpillar Tractor Co. offered a three year contract to Local Lodge 851 members in Joliet which was rejected 1690 to 1391 in a Sunday election at Joliet Central High School. The current contract expires Sunday at 12:01 a.m. and members voted 1837 to 1552 to strike if no new deal by then. Negotiations began October 1 with a 1:30 p.m. union meeting planned, with details of the proposal not released. The union previously went on a seven week strike three years ago.

Youth Drowns in Kankakee River in Illinois
Wilmington and Braidwood fire departments continued dragging the Kankakee River for the body of 17 year old Frank Garth of Wilmington. Police said Garth was skating with Wayne Taylor Saturday evening when the ice cracked and he fell in at about 7 50 p.m.
