Rural Exodus Threatens U S Future Says USDA Official
Henry L. Ahlgren Undersecretary of Agriculture for Rural Development warned at the Illinois Rural Development workshop at Starved Rock State Park that continued rural to urban migration could push 9 percent of the U S population into metropolitan areas by 2000. He called the trends a collision course with disaster noting pollution housing blight crime and strained city systems. He urged action under a Nixon administration commitment to rural development saying a better rural countryside will also create better cities and a better America.

B52 Bomber Crashes Into Lake Michigan Near Charlevoix
An unarmed B52 bomber on a training flight from Westover Air Force Base exploded and crashed into Lake Michigan about 11 miles northeast of Charlevoix. Coast Guard units reported wreckage including two empty life vests and a helmet with no survivors found. A Strategic Air Command team planned to arrive to investigate.

Troopers Save Man Life After Meningitis Patient Recovers

British Diplomat Kidnapped in Montevideo by Tupamaros
British Ambassador Geoffrey Jackson 55 was seized this morning outside the British Embassy in Montevideo by the Tupamaros, who say they hold him and two guards. Aides were reportedly beaten, the car driven away, then found nearby with diplomatic markings.
