The Pentagon announces the largest base cutback since 1970, eliminating 21 172 civilian and 16 640 military positions at 274 sites. Major closures include Boston Navy Yard and Hunters Point in San Francisco, with substantial savings cited.
Greenwood Roarty Hinman of Pontiac presented the audit to the County Board showing a general fund cash balance of $826,009.03 for the year ending Nov. 30, 1972, with 1971 at $897,519.30 and several fund balances and revenues detailed across highway, bridge, tuberculosis, retirement, civil defense, and election funds.
Four more petitions join twelve candidates seeking seats on the Mazon Community unit school board for the May 5 election. The filing indicates local candidates contesting the board positions and shaping the race.
Mostly sunny today with highs in the upper 50s and a warmer night. The District No 2 Board of Education ballot now lists 12 candidates including Lee A Miller and Phyllis A Breisch, with filings ending four minutes before the deadline. Terms for board seats will be determined by lot after the election.
Construction on the storm and sanitary sewers for the northeast area proceeds but funding remains in doubt after referendums failed. City aldermen discuss HUD grants, motor fuel tax funds, and possible bonds or special assessments while urging faster action to avoid higher future costs. Downspout disconnections are urged to reduce sewer treatment costs ahead of a 1978 federal deadline.
Five people were injured when a two-vehicle accident on U S 6 near the Illinois 47 intersection occurred at 5 18 p m Monday. Connie Sanders 16 the other driver was cited for driving while unlicensed and improper lane usage. All injured were treated and released at Morris Hospital.
Leslie Ross delivered a self penned farewell as he did not seek re election from Coal City Community Unit District No. 11 after more than two decades on the board and prior service on South Side Grade School. Election results showed Anselmo Wills and Peterson sworn in with 722 ballots cast and several write ins.
Unofficial returns for Morris Grade School Board of Education show Robert Hunter Jr. 432 votes and Harry Hyatt 447 votes. Hyatt led with 364 votes in Precinct I at Franklin School and 83 at Precinct II, while Hunter totaled 361 in Precinct I and 71 in Precinct II at Wauponsee Town Hall.
Early votes show light to medium turnout in Morris city wards with 190 ballots in the third ward at Telfer's Printing Shop. The third ward contests Elmo Ray Younger and Glen Hutchings, while other wards list Republican alderman candidates John Maunder Donald Barkley and Robert Gilbertson. Polls stay open until 6 p.m.
