The Rays Ramblins report excellent weather and strong exhibit turnout at the 1961 festival. Growers showcased prize specimens in a notably good harvest year while townsfolk enjoyed outdoor visits. A local item notes a large sweet potato and questions about the former Ottumwa air base’s deteriorating facilities and unused government buildings.
A Cry In the Night, an hour long missionary documentary by World Vision, Inc. will be shown at the Evangelical United Brethren church in Moravia on Sunday evening September 24 at 7 30. The film shot in color across Asia includes scenes of demon possession in Bali a temple cockfight a modern Tokyo and a missionary nurse in peril.
Churches using the film avoid rental fees and World Vision offerings and must instead fund their own foreign missionary program through an offering.
Margaret Fenton reports social visits in Union Township with Mrs. Herschel Kelly, Brenda, and the Kelly families at homes of Mrs. Charlotte Rogers and Mr. Harold Fenton. Moravia Fall Festival attendance noted among local families and a bank party at Dianne Kincade’s home in Moravia.
Mr and Mrs Ivan Harsh returned Tuesday evening from spending a week with their son and wife Mr and Mrs Richard Harsh at Arlington Virginia. Several families and friends visited during the Moravia fall festival weekend including Mr and Mrs Loyd Carter and others. Donald West attended a 4 H county officers meeting in Centerville. Next meeting will be with Deloris Ballanger October 5.
Long list of prize winners from a school fair feature items across categories. Margaret Callen and Nellie Williams headline numerous ribbons in pies, cakes, candies, breads, and handcrafts. Contests include home economics baking and fabric crafts with many participants named.
The list shows numerous first places across categories in vegetables fruits and crops led by Ensil Hiatt Ira Boyer Mearl Walter and Danny Brooks with winners in pumpkins cucumbers corn muskmelons melons and gourds. In the Girls Department entries include chocolate cake white cake angel food and sewing crafts with top honors for Shirley Calhoun Marjorie French Lorraine Walker and Beverly VerSteegh among others.

Exhibits include first place honors for items such as Leghorn, Butter Cup entries, peach pickle, stuffed peppers, various jams, jellies, pickles, and garden vegetables. Local residents O J Tarbell and Nellie Williams frequently appear among top placings with others like Melissa Felton, Mamie Tisue, Irene Fowler, and Violet Lindley earning multiple ribbons.
