Hog Bruises Slash Market Prices Warn Farmers
Iowa State College livestock expert William Zmol ek warns that proper hog handling to avoid bruises is crucial to securing top prices this fall and winter as higher slaughter volumes raise packer and buyer scrutiny. He notes hog bruise losses average about eight cents per head, totaling around five million dollars nationally in 1954, with 10 to 12 percent higher hog slaughter anticipated this year.

Entomologists Report Borers Din Drought Impact on Crop
College entomologists say dry weather did not stop borers but the season was milder than feared. About a million acres treated for first brood and 50 000 to 100 000 acres for second brood. Harvest time shows dropped ears and broken stalks, with fall infestation offering limited clues for next year’s problems due to uncertain spring survival and weather.
