Memorial Day services drew a small crowd at Moravia Cemetery where the Moravia high school band played and wreaths were placed for deceased servicemen. Cemeteries in the area were well kept with lush green turf and tidy grounds, and Lake Rathbun offered calm scenery during the holiday.
Joe Murphy at Honey Creek State Park says Friday night into Saturday saw nonstop traffic as people arrived seeking campsites. Fishing reportedly good despite crowds. nine barrels of waste collected from fish-cleaning areas. About 180000 visitors noted with attendees from Illinois Nebraska Wisconsin Missouri and many Iowa counties. The lake remains famous for fishing camping and boating facilities.
The community mourns Myrtle Harrington as it extends sympathy to her immediate family. Various local residents share visits and travel notes including Claudia Purdum, Batayis friend, and local families such as Burger, Miller, Powers, and Wolf with connections to Waterloo, Texas, Oskaloosa, Dunn North Carolina, and Centerville.
Mrs Kenneth Cross and others from New London visited area families over the weekend. Merle Whitmore is improving at St Joseph hospital after a tractor incident. Floyd Wood returns home after hospital treatment. Crops are nearly in for most farmers. a few soybeans remain. Lester Pete Smith is improving at Davis County hospital in Bloomfield. Weekend guests included Vernon Burger and family, Leonard Wolf funeral in Waterloo, and many local gatherings.
Siby Whitehead visited Velma nee in Albia Tuesday morning. Mrs Ray Semestones in Mesa and Thompson attended the Rennae dinner. Mr and Mrs Dicks hosted a Clover Leaf Club trip to Des Moines midweek. Moravia high school graduation guests attended the Truxton Dicks home event. Ernestine Argo and Glen Dicks joined Mildred Argo and others at the Brown home Wednesday.
A Friday list records visits and gatherings across Ottumwa and Bloomfield. Edith Callen returns with family for Memorial Day weekend from Mishawaka. several couples host dinners, picnics, and Sunday meals including Brown, Argo, Sheldon, Callen, and Jackson families.
Nash of s Movies was seen at the Ghoun home Sunday afternoon and at Roy Argo’s home Sunday evening. Warren Rouse visited the B F Whitehead home Monday morning in a series of local social mentions.
The Appangose County Board of Supervisors met in regular session May 20 1975 at 9:00 A.M. with Doyle N. Anderson as Chairman and members Perm it Strickler and Arthur M. Streepy present. Minutes from May 5 were read and approved. The board enacted business items and approved claims in Road and County funds including sheriff's department expenses, supplies, payroll, and services. Substantial line items include prison care, office supplies, insurance, and miscellaneous postage and maintenance costs.
A fragmentary county ledger lists payments to banks, insurance firms, utilities, and services. Names include Centerville National Bank, Iowa Telephone Company, Grimes David T auditor, Polk County Sheriff Dick J Clemens, and Blue and Red Carllerympany. Amounts appear mixed with rent, supplies, and payroll items.
