Virginia McDonough opens a new needle work department in the basement of McDonough's Gamble Store Moravia with remodeled space and a large stock including over 300 pattern and plan books, yarns, kits, and knitting supplies. Official opening Saturday June 7 invites area ladies with door prizes and specials.
Honors lists show seniors juniors sophomores and freshmen with multiple spellings and OCR errors. Mrs. Dora Wilson hosted the Past Matrons Club Tuesday for their regular meeting. Items discussed included a beggar fairad and a thank you note from Maxine. A bill for school supplies was presented. social hour featured angel food cake, ice cream, fresh strawberries, mint tea, coffee and orange drink.
Moravia Saddle Club announces a supper gathering this Thursday hosted at the club. Members and friends are invited to share a meal and discuss upcoming activities at the usual meeting place.
Mrs Lula Hiatt recovering slowly at St Joseph Hospital Centerville after a heart attack several weeks ago. Glen Fowler suffered a heart attack Friday morning at his home. He was taken to Monroe County Hospital at noon and then transferred to Ortumwa hospital for intensive care.
For the Clover Leaf Club May meeting a group visited Des Moines for a fun day. They had a style show and lunch at Younker's Tea Room then shopped at Merle Hay Plaza. Members listed include Velda Brown Lucy Laws Giennie Phyllis Dicks Ernestine Argo Mable Vera Moore Joann Turner and Margaret Tarbell. The next regular meeting is scheduled for September.
The Moravia Garden Club met Wednesday May 28 1975 at Mrs Keith Chelsings home for a 9:00 am brunch. Rain canceled the Lake Rathbun breakfast plan and the group hopes June meeting will be at the Lake. Main business covered the miles and schedule for the October 4 Flower Show.
A brief expression of gratitude from Mrs. Carl Burkiand to friends and neighbors for cards letters and flowers during a recent hospitalization. She notes all were very much appreciated.
Moravia Garden Club acknowledges Mrs Monnie Boldt and Mariya Koffman for organizing and leading the 6th grade students in picking up trash and debris last week. The effort also involves Chaimaan Gladys Harsh.
The Moravia Esatern Star plans a regular pin event Tuesday evening June 2 with Cope De Ps and Maxine Main serving as secretary.
Jerald Ballenger left Thursday May 29 for Fort Leonard Wood Missouri to begin basic training with the U S Army. Visitors from Billings Montana Mrs Jack Gear were guests of the Wallace Parmer family Wednesday and Thursday May 28 and 29. Mrs Parmer’s brother Jack Gear traveled with Mrs Gear. Mrs Parmer’s mother visited Amherst Junction Wisconsin this weekend for the Memorial dedication at the Amherst United Methodist church on Sunday June 1. John Dille of Gravity and grandson Ricky Morgan spent Saturday with Mr and Mrs Paul Broshar and saw other friends in Moravia. Gay Peterson of Darby Edith Johnson of Centerville and Aleda Simmons of Chicago visited Minta Shoemaker Sunday. Sunday evening callers at Minta Shoemaker included Eugene Cooper of Plano Mrs Wanda Murdy Mrs Lou Emma Palmer Mrs Genevieve Morgan Mrs Mary McClurg and Mrs Garnet Brain who attended the Veterans Hospital in Knoxville Tuesday for the Fifth District Auxiliary Legion picnic for the veterans there. Mrs Guy Vincent and Gaylan spent Sunday morning at the home of Mr and Mrs George Watson and son Timothy and had Sunday dinner with Mr and Mrs Gib Gibson in Des Moines. Mrs Carl Burkland returned home from Spirit Lake after three months with her daughter and family Mr and Mrs Gerald Covington.
Connie Robinson led Tops 812 in total weight loss for May with weekly honors to Phyllis Clark Connie Imogene Tisue Betty Mobley and Delores Ballanger. Talks covered habits dieting saving money and longer life with nutritionist Lindy Harris discussing menus and quotes encouraging weight loss. The group maintains an inspiration box with poems and encouraging notes from participants.
The Church of the Nazarene page lists Vacation Bible School directed by Alice Woodward with Rose Mary Smith as president and teen and junior directors. Senior High Camp runs Mon June 9 to Fri June 13 at West Des Moines camp grounds with related Missionary Meeting June 11 at 7 30 pm. Various prayer and fasting events bend toward June 12 and a Bible School picnic June 14 with transport help at 724 3049.
Pastor Wallace Palmer leads a summer program with 8:30 a.m. Grace worship and 9:30 a.m. church school at Salem and Grace, 10:30 a.m. worship at Salem, Vacation Bible School 9:00-11:30 a.m. June 8 offering for world hunger relief, June 11 men’s breakfast and Bible study 6:30 a.m. Jerry Boblenz is lay leader.
Kenneth Contra Sunday School Superintendent presents activities at Salem United Methodist Church. On Sunday June 8 attend Sunday Evening Worship at 7 30 p.m. On Wednesday June 11 Bible Study and Prayer Meeting at 7 p.m. He invites belief in addressing world hunger.
Rev L B Deedrick and Pastor Donald Whitehead invite worship at 9 30 am with chart study from the Cross to Eternity and a 10 30 am Church School. Bible School runs June 5 1 30 to 4 pm June 6 1 to 4 pm with a time change from 1 30 pm to 1 pm.
Mr and Mrs Kenneth Condra and Dennis spent a week in Anaheim visiting daughter Mary Ellen Tomlin and family They also visited brother Gene Condra and wife They traveled by United Air Line touring The Queen Mary at Long Beach and attended Knotts Berry Farm Strawberry Festival and Parade at Garden Grove
Tops 872 met at Moravia for its regular gathering with Elaine presiding. Debbie Scott earned Princess honors and Wanda led the month as Queen while several members attended. Mrs Exline spoke about dieting and shared recipes, with guests from FOPS 1 participating.
Senior citizens meals announced with a June schedule offering cornbread and beans spaghetti and meat spinach salad and dessert on Monday. On Wednesday June 11 beef and noodles mashed potatoes scalloped corn are served. Friday June 13 features sandwiches potatoes and peas and carrots.
The calendar lists multiple upcoming high school games and a board meeting. Baseball and softball matches are scheduled at Twin Cedars, Davis County, Mormon Trail, Melcher, Centerville, Albia, and Leon with dates from June 4 to June 16. A board meeting is set for June 16 at Twin Cedars.
In the Babe Ruth season opener Moravia White Sox fell 10 0 to Albia Royals Sunday afternoon. Moravia’s battery was Brian Harrington and Alan Tisue. K Garret hit a three run homer in the third with one on, then Gaffey doubled with the bases loaded to drive in eight in the fifth. Moravia had two singles by Bruce and J Tubaugh. Next game is at Souila Thursday night and then Albia Tigers at Albia Monday evening.
A Saturday evening shower at Salem United Methodist Church honored Jan Felske, who will marry Galin Shelquist on June 7. Hostesses were Lois Mason Wa netta McCloud Wanda Murdy Helen Tadlock and Margaret Van Zante. Guests enjoyed dessert, punch and coffee as gifts were opened and displayed.
Moravia experiences ongoing disruption as the main street from Hwy 5 into town remains closed for railroad crossing repairs. County surveyors have begun grading the main road through Moravia to connect with Unionville Pavement, with start dates for grading still unknown.
The Daily Vacation Bible School program will be held at Iconium United Methodist Church on Friday June 6 at 8 p m. Attendance is strong as youngsters learn a lot and wish to share with you in this program. Teachers and helpers join the students for the evening and invite many to come and enjoy.
Nicky Dicks son of Mr and Mrs Paul Dicks signed a contract to teach at Waukee schools this fall he will teach high school math and serve as assistant girls basketball coach Dicks is a graduate of University of Northern Iowa Cedar Falls this spring term
Mrs Sharon Penfield and Mrs Shirley Ann Gray spent Sunday afternoon at the Billy Wilson home and visited with several locals including Mrs Patty Cowen and Mrs Kathleen Sannipelli. Mr and Mrs Paul Benell Jr and Chris and Alice Easter joined later with Mr Monte Albers and Andy near Powersville Missouri. Robin Benell returned home with them.
Lynita Clarise Bolin and William Harold Brown exchanged vows Sunday June 1 1975 at Bloomfield United Methodist Church at 1230 PM. The bride wore a white satin gown and carried white spider mums on a white cross with pink and lavender ribbons while Denise Bolin served as maid of honor. A small reception followed at the church and a four tier wedding cake topped with a bride and groom stood near the head table. The couple plans to reside at 302 E Walnut Bloomfield after a trip to visit relatives. Out of town guests hailed from Des Moines Ottumwa and nearby towns.
Funeral services were held Monday June 2 1975 at 1 00 p m at the First United Methodist Church in Waterloo for A G Jim Broshar who died Saturday morning May 31 from a stroke He had suffered a heart attack Thursday followed by two strokes Interment was in Garden of Memories in Waterloo He was born November 18 1899 the son of Harve and Artie Mc Danel Broshar Survivors include his wife Gail two daughters Jean Catshall Marilyn Pape a son Gerald Broshar nine grandchildren one great grandchild two sisters Mia Alena Schreiner of Livermore California and Mrs Dorothy Turner of Moravia He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers Ivan Clair Chester and Rudolph Broshar.
Moravia high school softball and baseball opened strong with two wins in conference play. Girls fell 4-1 at Ottumwa on four hits and one error, while Moravia’s hitters included Kaster McBride Clark and Van Benthuysen. Freshman Sheri Easter earned her 21st win. Boys rolled Seymour 13-0 in five innings as Uhlenhake pitched a no hitter with seven strikeouts. Jeff McDanel and Jeff C. McDanel led Moravia at bat.
The Monroe Busy Maidens held their regular May meeting at Brenda Johnson’s home with six members and one guest. Officers reported, and the group set a 4-H dinner for June 3 at 9:00 a.m. in Moravia Community Building. Brenda Johnson spoke on "Let's hard cook eggs" before refreshments.
The Appanoose County Historical Society will meet at the Museum on Monday June 9 at 7 30 p m Everyone is invited Your presence is needed to keep the Museum open for the Bicentennial Year
Lt and Mrs G Franklyn Hunter welcome Tracy Ranea born May 22 weighing 7 lbs 7 oz at Corpus Christi Naval Air Hospital. Grandparents Gerald Hunter Blakesburg Marian Todd Memphis. Lt Hunter is a flight instructor at Corpus Christi Naval Air Station. A son Richard Aaron born May 22 to Mr and Mrs Phil Harrington Moravia Rt. Grandparents Richard Harrington Moravia and Samuel Thomas Unionville. Ronald and Mrs Woodward Centerville announce Megan Diane born May 31 at St Joseph hospital weighing 8 lbs 10 oz welcomed by brothers Sean and Shannon. Grandparents Lela Judge and Mr and Mrs Ror Woodward.
