A reader recounts buying a tire and discovering taxes added at every turn. The dealer cites factory, transportation, and worker security levies, all feeding into the price. The shopper notes the original tire cost would have been far lower without government levies.
The piece recalls a Cantril Iowa church dedication, rebuilt from the basement up after a fire. The event was joyous with no finance talk, the church fully furnished, and the balance of over 4 thousand dollars returned to the bank. It is presented as a community success contrasting federal deficit worries.
The Evangelical United Brethren Church led by Rev Harold Magon and Rev Leo Wilson will hold regular services on Sunday May 21 with 10 00 a m Sunday School at 10 50 a m Worship service A daily vacation Bible school is planned for the last two weeks of July.
M L Abrahamson of Boone runs for state treasurer in the dune and primary. A Scandinavian born on a Boone County farm he has 12 years as deputy and county treasurer and 11 years in the State Tax Commission. He would succeed J M Grimes who retires to return to newspaper work.
Waunetta McConnell, minister, invites worshippers to Sunday morning services at 11:00 with the sermon The Fork in The Road. Church school at 10:30, W.S.C.S. officers to be installed, Poppy Day dedicated, and a new young adult class organized for engaged couples.
A church notice invites attendance at Fairview Methodist Sunday School at 9 45 a m and Public Worship at the same morning hour. The sermon topic is What Jesus Said About Being a Disciple urging members to stay on the right path every Sunday.
As nicer weather returns, the Conium Methodist Church urges members to attend Sunday school next Sunday and stay for worship to discuss the topic Value and Coat of Being A Christian.
Church of the Nazarene led by Pastor F A Hahn offers Sunday school at 10 00 am with Mrs F A Hahn as superintendent and Morning Worship at 11 00 am Prayer meeting is Thursday at 8 00 pm.
The Moravia Church of Christ announces a 10:00 a.m. Bible school with Eugene McCrory as superintendent, followed by an 11:00 a.m. Lord's Supper and sermon led by Billy Schaffner. An 8:00 p.m. Bible Study and Prayer meeting, and Wednesday 8:00 p.m. preaching by Clarence Schaffner.
Carolyn Boyer Joyce Hiatt and Miss Kimbrell of the Moravia Future Homemakers of America attended the state convention in Des Moines April 21 and 22. A college teacher from England spoke on life there, and the event featured a fun night with folk and square dances. The girls found the convention educational and plan to bring insights back to their Moravian chapter.
Centerville reports the closing of the Phe' Blue Front School on Wednesday. The teacher treated students and their mothers to visits around Centerville and a picnic at the park at noon. Hazel Hellyer will teach here again next year. Newton residents Kenneth Gardner and wife visited T. R. Gardner’s home on Sunday, while Mrs. C. W. Moore hosted Mr. and Mrs. Bill Abbott Council Bluffs, Mrs. Flo Chambera Ottumwa, and Elbert Moore with children from Teonium.

Mr and Mrs Truxton Dicks visited at the Roy Scott home in Centerville Sunday. Mrs Roy Argo called on Nona Dicks Wednesday afternoon. Mr and Mrs Haver Free were dinner guests of Mrs Nellie Thompson Sunday. Mr and Mrs Floyd Allem and family of Des Moines spent the weekend at the Ben Allem home.
Visitors present were Mabel Ham mond, Frame, Pearl Fre, Gar trude, Richard Neal and Tommy Penfield, Edith and Gilbert Gallén, Glenna and Tillarton Dicks, Verha and John McAninch, Helen, Jim and Max McAninch, Farn Penfield, Mildred and Vanchie Tarbell, Clifford Ballenger, Lloyd and Gonddn Massman. Next meeting will be with Addie Sheldon June 21. The club will have a picnic June 26 at Centerville park.
Maple Grove held a noon basket dinner for the last day of school. Teacher Mrs. Raymond Ashby led a program for 17 pupils and awarded prizes for perfect attendance and achievement. Mothers received gifts made by the children, and parents presented Mrs. Ashby a large mirror as thanks.
