A harsh hail and wind event battered Ray Ramblin's Insurance offices with roofs torn and glass shattered over a large storefront. Debris and rain whipped through the shop as workers chased protection and attempted to board up a damaged window using a four foot square plank from Turner Lumber Yard.
A rambling Unionville column recounts late spring intrusions by prowlers, federal spending critiques, home improvements, a severe windstorm causing widespread damage, and community updates. It notes injuries from debris, farm losses, and local social events plus farm program costs and road right of way tensions.
Udell residents host visitors from Ottumwa and Centerville. A bus of Udell high school students toured Ottumwa to view President Truman. Mrs. Minnie Replogle recovered from illness as visitors called. a Brethren church communion service occurred. A wind storm caused injuries and a plate glass store window shattered. A double wedding at the Brethren Manse was held by Rev. W. R. Deeter. Families traveled to Topeka and Denver for health and visits. Damage included a large barn demolished on the CBD HE Johnston farm and chest injuries to Ancil Glasgow. Margaret Henderson and others visited Udell residents in a busy week.
G M Browning, manager of the outlying experimental farms at Iowa State College, states contour farming reduces required power by about ten percent compared with traditional up and down hill methods.
Pleasant Hill society notes list visits and weekend gatherings among the Dicks, Callens, Argo and Brown families. A funeral service was held for Florence White in California, aunt of Mrs. Tarbell. A May 4th miscellaneous shower honored Mrs. Paul Dicks with games, refreshments, and several local attendees.
A list of names including Edith Called Edith Vert Sybil Argo Flo Frate Gettinda Tommy Penfield Beryl Brown Mabel Hammond Clark Brown and others, with Mrs Ben Allem Mrs John Laws Nona Dicks and honoree Mrs Paul Dicks receiving gifts. Attendees Grace Whitehead Laura Dicks Bertha Overtrf Farn Penfield and Mrs Cat Fenton also noted.
The Happy Helpers 4 H club of Franklin township held its regular May meeting led by president Martha Potts. Roll call referenced dishwashing dislikes. The program was postponed. Mabel Moore named assistant leader. Refreshments served to Joann e Moore Charlotte McAninch Betty Marilyn Landgrebe Mary Lou Rinehert Kay Overturf Martha McCord Lorraine Hammond Lois Albertson Dorothy Potts and hostess Martha Potts. June meeting planned with Joanne Moore for an afternoon gathering. Lois Albertson reporter.
