Appanoose county sheriff notes only minor juvenile issues in the county and rejects claims of the state’s highest delinquency. He cites limited incidents, contrasts with Monroe county nearby, and attributes calmer youth behavior to leadership in schools churches and homes.
A dense list of visits and gatherings across the community includes Mr. and Mrs. Billi Landgrebe, Louise Rinehart, and Gerald Rinehart’s households. Numerous couples and families such as the Christys, Nashs, Wakefields, and Whites share dinners, Sunday visits, and basket dinners at Iconium school, Pleasant Hill, and nearby homes.
In a City district bulletin Superintendent Fenton notes Friday marked the last day for seniors but many linger this week as school winds down. Buses will shuttle students home after lunch today as the year ends and the memory of school days lingers.
The Union Neighbors gathered May 1 with Mrs Herschel Kelley. Roll call was My Favorite Food. Janet led group singing. A secretary report explained pennies for friendship funds. Attendees heard Rural Women's Day speakers and Del Donahoo pictures. Corrie spoke on heart operations in Des Moines for children previously needing Rochester care. Eva read a Mother's Day poem. A short segment from This Is Your Life was shown. Gerry presented a bracelet a horse and a handkerchief. Mrs Williams will host the night meeting at Fairview school house with cake or cookies. Refreshments for 13 women and 12 children served.
The Hilton 4-H club met May 14 at Hilton Church with President Jim Rogers leading the pledge. Members present included Paul Turner Ronnie VanZante Carl Rogers John Murdy and others. They planned an ice cream social for June 12 and an athletic tour during the third week of June. Demonstrations on tractor parts were given by Jim Rogers and Donald Tibball. Ice cream bars were served by several members as the meeting adjourned.
Sun day guests of Rev. and Mrs. Atwood included Mr. and Mrs. Harley Sulser with afternoon callers from Tarbell Curtis and Walker. The Appanoose County Board met in regular session with Walter Harper Glen Johnson and Earl Exline present. They approved general funds and attendant claims including supplies services and salaries for county offices and townships.
A Mother Daughter Nebet gathering was held Wednesday afternoon at the Grate Methodist church. Mrs. Carl Black played organ as guests seated, with Mrs. Black and Mrs. Winslet performing a duet. Speakers included Mrs. D. Bishop who gave a welcome, Mrs. Laberten who addressed “Today's Mother's,” and a closing tribute by Mrs. Slow. A fellowship tea followed in the dining room with 40 attendees.
Amey residents hosted relatives and friends from Des Moines Ottumwa and Marshalltown over Mothers Day weekend. Guests included the Laws, Dicks, Stone, Woodward, Hammond, Blackman, Becke and Perry families with multiple dinners and calls in town and nearby Des Moines and Ottumwa. Sophomore class planned a YMCA swimming party in Ottumwa.

Attendees mark Mothers Day with relatives, tulip festival trips, and church group meetings. Several relocations and work plans surface as Donahoos move to Omaha and Del Dowd pursues radio and TV work.
