Agriculture advances soil bank plan with rise in corn support

The 1956 proposal advanced by the Department of Agriculture would broaden soil bank coverage to grazing land if ranchers cut grazing herds and boost annual acreage reserve funds from 750 to 800 million while keeping the conservation reserve at 450 million. It followed a Hickenlooper amendment, raising corn acreage allowance from 43 to 51 million acres and allowing noncompliant producers to still receive some supports if caps apply. Different support prices would apply: noncomm belt soil bank with 15 percent reserve at 1.12 2, nonbelt base crops at 1.23 3, commercial belt without quotas at 1.25, and compliant belt at 1.50 with 15 percent reserve. Feed grain parity reduced to 81.2 percent for 1958 and 1957.
