Des Moines hosts a high school girls state basketball final where Slater, a small school with 33 girls in high school, edged Kamrar to win the title. Kamrar, also small with 81 girls, challenged Slater in the final.

Carl Bennes of Corydon planned a surprise visit to war-time friend Maurice Kerr of Morning Sun. He learned upon arriving at Kerr’s home that Kerr, who trained as an officer with him, had been killed when his plane was shot down over Germany near the war’s end.
