Summer Concerts To Begin Saturday

Summer concert series opens at the Moravia Community building on Saturday night June 4 with players to arrive by 7 15. Others may join the band for the series and individual lessons start Wednesday June 8 at the schoolhouse with times to be checked.

Shower honors Mrs. Wintermute at Evangelical church

A miscellaneous shower was held Friday evening at the Evangelical United Brethren church for Mrs. Dean E. Wintermute of Des Moines. Hostesses included Mrs. Carl VanZante and others. The program featured pencil games and a pan tomime mock wedding. Gifts and lavender aqua decor, plus homemade ice cream cake and coffee, ended the evening.

Lynn Firkins Graduates From Bible College

Lynn Wood Firkins, grandson of the late W G Firkins, graduates from Manhattan Bible College Kansas on May 23 1959 with BA Bible and BTh. He wins 75 for written sermon and presents class photo to president Burton B Thurston. He served as class president and has pastored in Circleville and Le Roy Kansas.

Garden club hosts Hobo hike at Nelie Williams home

Members of the Garden club met at Nelie Williams' country home for a Hobo hike Wednesday afternoon, May 25. They drove to the woods, ate lunch, and spent the afternoon looking for flowers. Hostesses were Mrs. Sybil Whitehead and Earlene Davis.

Memorial Day weekend draws many visitors to Albia

The community welcomed numerous out of town visitors over Memorial Day weekend. Residents hosted relatives from Burlington Des Moines Ottumwa and Des Moines while lighting up local cemeteries and sharing family gatherings. Several families relocated or hosted guests including the Coxs moving to North Street and many locals visiting kin across Albia and nearby towns.

Daily Vacation Bible School presents a Sunday evening program of music demonstrations of school work and memory work at Grace Methodist Church at 8 00 p m Two offerings were collected last week for the Christian Overseas Rural program and this week for the Tom Stixrud family currently in missionary work The school will close Friday noon.

Mrs Wintermute Honored At Breakfast Shower

Miss Mary Rose Main and Mrs Georgiana Winsler Baldwin hosted an 830 breakfast at the Main home to honor Mrs Delma Veach Wintermute whose April 27 wedding to Dean Wintermute was recent. Gifts were found in a treasure hunt with assistance from Mrs Almont Main and Mrs George Winster. Out of town guest included Mrs Bernard Barnthouse of Newton.

Mrs Peck Suffered Stroke and Transferred to Ottumwa Home

Mrs LaVada Peck who suffered a stroke last Wednesday night was taken to the home of her daughter Mrs Frank Hammond at Ottumwa Tuesday to be cared for. Her son Frank Adams of Detroit and daughters Mrs Stella Lenz of Des Moines and Mrs Hammond have been caring for her. The trip was made in the Turner ambulance.

Fellowship group picnic supper at Moravia park

The boys and girls factions of the E. U. B. church held a picnic supper in Moravia park on Tuesday evening. Attendees included Ralph Davis Harold Mason Am mond and Rev. and Mrs. Lynn King and Debbie. About 25 children were present.

Progressive club enjoys dessert and theater show night

Mrs. George Winsler Mrs. Ger ald Morgan and Mrs. Cecil Schrodt hosted the Progressive club on Thursday evening. Members gathered at the Winsler home for dessert and then went to Albia to attend the show at the King theater.

A luncheon at the Kel ley home in Moravia Sunday brought together many Burns and related families from Moravia Promise City Ottumwa and Unionville. Guests included Mrs Mary Burns Mr and Mrs Dayne Taylor Dorothy Jerry Larry Maxine Max and Margaret Burns and others. In the afternoon the group visited Unionville cemetery to decorate graves.

Waters Gladfelder Nuptials At Methodist Parsonage

Miss Iola Waters and Gene Gladfelder were married Friday evening May 27 at 8 by Rev. John Grenfell at the Methodist parsonage. The couple, both from Iowa towns, were attended by Carol June Waters and Robert C. Gladfelder as matron of honor and best man. After the ceremony they went to Des Moines where they will reside while employed. Waters is a 1954 graduate of Lovilia high school and Gladfelder is a Moravia graduate.

Alumni Picnic At Moravia Park Draws Wide Alumni Reach

Moravia high school alumni gathered at Moravia park on Memorial Day for a basket lunch. Attendees came from Afton Newton Marshalltown Moville Knoxville Centerville Oskaloosa Melcher Creston Ottumwa Des Moines New Sharon and Moravia. The oldest class represented was 1902 and the youngest 1949 with two former teachers present. The planning committee for next year includes Mrs. Raymond Ashby and others with a goal of larger attendance.

Fifth Graders Enjoy Educational Chicago Trip

A group of 30 Moravia and Udell students and chaperones rode a special six-car train to Chicago, visiting Union Station, the Museum of Natural History, Shedd Aquarium, Lincoln Park Zoo, and the Museum of Science and Industry. The day included lunch at Fred Harvey's and a tour of a German WWII submarine exhibit.

Allotment Tie-In With ACP Eliminated

Appanoose county ASC reports that farmers no longer must meet acreage allotments to qualify for cost sharing conservation payments. The May 23 signing by President Eisenhower ends the allotment tie in. Prompt filing remains advantageous as funds and approvals continue to evolve with year, and county allotment was $113,800 with much already obligated.

Farmers Urged to Aid Corn Acreage Measurements

Appanoose county farmers are urged by the ASC committee to assist in June field measurements of corn to verify acreage for allotments and eligibility for price support. Farmers must be present or designate someone to help the measurer to avoid delays. notices of results go out by July 15 with August 5 deadline to remove excess acreage for those aiming to qualify.
