Fire destroys Melrose corner building housing Harley’s store

Early Monday a fire gutted the corner building at Melrose housing Harley’s general store telephone office in the rear and Murphy cafe. Fire spread halted by a fire wall. Cedar creek water aided crews from Russell Chariton Albia Centerville Knoxville and local departments. The blaze caused smoke and water damage to Winnie OConner grocery and minor impact on the post office.

Service Members and Navy Visit at Rose Festival 1959

Paul Wilson in Army reserve undergoing basic training at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri. Ernest D. Heimick, electrician's mate third class USN, son of Moravia Iowa, served aboard USS Inflict visiting Portland June 10 17 for the Rose Festival and Oregon Centennial with 14 Navy ships and Canadian frigates. Vice Admiral Libby led First Fleet into Portland aboard USS Helena. Darwin Jordan of Moravia, home on leave from Radioman Class A school, and Moravia High School graduate 1958, awaits advancement as Navy Radioman.

A reception is planned for Rev and Mrs White nack and family Wednesday evening July 1 at 8 00 at the Methodist church. All are invited to attend.

All-Out War Planned Against Dangerous Drivers in Iowa

Towa sheriffs and deputies, about 400 strong, will wage an all out war against dangerous drivers during the long 4th of July weekend. Sheriff E H Bradley of Dakota City, president of the Iowa State Sheriffs Association, said a continuous patrol on primary and secondary roads will run Friday through Sunday to cut highway deaths and accidents. About 99 counties will be covered with 400 officers plus deputies and special deputies. Backup support includes 99 sheriffs wives and staff to handle calls. Final plans were made in Iowa City at an executive board meeting with roughly 65 sheriffs participating.

County 4 H Camp Plans Complete

Appanoose County 4-H camp plans are set with a July 22 to 24 date shared with Polk County 4-H. Reservations close July 6 for girls and boys. camp limit is 60 from the county and riders must be 12 or older. Cost is ten dollars covering metals crafts materials and transportation with copper enameling leather belts aluminum trays and mosaic tile as crafts.

Moravia Library Opens Friday Afternoon for Fourth of July

The Moravia Public Library will open Friday afternoon and evening instead of Saturday due to the Fourth of July falling on Saturday. Seventy five teenage traveling library books have been placed on the shelves for readers, and new magazines have been donated for enjoyment.

Tadlock Assigned to Red Oak District Pastorate

Rev Basil Tadlock was assigned at the Des Moines conference of the Methodist Churches to the Red Oak district where he will pastor three rural churches. His family plans to join him soon. He has pastored in Blakesburg for the past year and will attend a seminary in Kansas City in the fall.

Moravia Softball Boys Take Two More Wins

Moravia softball beat Attica 3-0 after avenging an earlier loss with five hits led by Johnson and Paxston. They then traveled to Pulaski and won 11-3 with Paxston on the mound and McDanel catching. Plans for a rained-out donkey ball game and upcoming trips to Newbern and Belinda are noted.

Ether Roberts, 77, longtime Monroe County official and educator, dies June 27, 1959 at Bagley nursing home Albia Iowa after a career as Monroe County Superintendent of Schools for 36 years. Survived by brother Guy Roberts and sister Lula Tillmont with several nephews and nieces. Funeral held 2:30 PM Monday at First Methodist Church Albia, interment Oak View cemetery.

Moravia School Board Sets Budget and Ends Fiscal Year

Moravia Community school district board of education met Wednesday evening approving closing of the 1958-59 fiscal year and adopting a budget. The 1960 school tax levy will cover expected expenditures, with an added school house fund for a new building. Rising operating costs may raise the general fund budget, and plans include viewing Des Moines area schools and completing architectural blueprints.

4 Way 4-H Youths Demonstrate Ice Cream Freezer

Jery Boblenz and Donald West led a blue ribbon demonstration at Centerville training school on making an ice cream freezer electric. Youth assistant Harold Craig supervised giving pointers. The 4-H youths missed State Fair due to age but plan another demonstration this year in 4-H competition.

Jeanne Robertson and Robert Carter united in marriage June 21 at Mediapolis Presbyterian Church in a ceremony officiated by Rev. Fred E. Robb.
