The Union publisher announces the $1.00 per year subscription offer will be extended. Renewals and new subscriptions have surged in December 1952, with many readers preferring to lock in the rate now. There are no strings attached and subscribers may prepay any number of years, saving 50 cents per year.
Hugh Guernsey of Centerville takes the post of county attorney succeeding Harry Greenleaf. He will keep his current secretary Maxine Messer smith and has no deputy to appoint. In the auditor’s office Clyde Erskine succeeds J. T. Sherrard with Mrs. Erskine as deputy auditor and Hilda Calhoun retained as clerk.
Centerville mourns the death of Clarence Farley, brother-in-law of Tom Underwood. Farley, 73, formerly of Edgar Springs, Mo., died at St. Joseph hospital after seven weeks there. The report includes unrelated discus sions on Technocracy and quotes by Howard Scott, contrasting social and economic theories and mentioning Al Smith and Hoover in a broader political context.
Moravia hosts strong Hiteman high cagers Friday night on the local court with Hiteman boasting season wins including 68 to 14 over Louilla and 48 to 12 over Blakesburg. Moravia counters with an 11 of 12 season record and the Appanoose county title, making the matchup potentially the season’s best. A curtain-raiser features Moravia’s second squad at 7:30 followed by the main game, with bargain admission of 10, 15, and 20 cents drawing a likely record crowd.
The Masons and Eastern Stars held a joint installation at their hall Monday evening with a large crowd. Visiting members from Knoxville Albig and Moulton chapters attended. Officers for both groups were installed by retiring officers, followed by a concert and oyster supper.
Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Chambers entertained guests at an oyster stew gathering at their home south of town on Wednesday evening, December 28. Attendees included Theo Miller and son Francis, R. L. Ballew, Mildred Chambers, Gerald Hunter, John S. Chambers, Everett Wynes, John L. Chambers of Albin, and others.
Virginia baked ham and candied sweet potatoes headline a Friday dinner menu. The spread includes baked Irish potatoes, scalloped corn, pickles, jelly, hot rolls, date pudding, whipped cream, and coffee.
The Nash golden wedding anniversary on Wednesday December 18 1932 at Moravia marked the marriage of their eldest grandson Dale Perry to Vivian Foster. The ceremony at the Nash home was followed by a gold themed reception at the Moravia Church of Christ dining parlor and an evening program in the church auditorium. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. C S Nash Mr. and Mrs Cherlea Foster Mr. and Mrs D H Jennison Mr. and Mrs L R Perry and many relatives. Mr. Nash 71 and Mrs Nash 67 have spent most of their lives in Appanoose County with strong community ties. Perry will reside on a farm near Moravia after March 1st.
The United Brethren church invites Bishop A. B. Stratton of Kansas City Missouri to visit this winter and sets March 5 1938 as the visit date. A program outline will be distributed and Stratton will take charge of the Southwest Area from Kansas City. A letter from C H Long Chugwater Wyoming notes Lew Main hopes to travel by crutches and mentions winter weather with wind and little snow.
A New Year Eve gathering at the Last home featured Mrs. J. L. Johnson and Mrs. Guay Luse hosting a Rook party with Vess Hiatt winning high score. Guests enjoyed refreshments and extended best wishes for the New Year as they departed.
A Christmas Day turkey dinner at the U. G Tueurs home drew a group including George Hiatt and his daughter Day Jolly from University Park, Iowa. Mr and Mrs Victor Mastin of Colony, Kansas. Mr and Mrs J Hy Phatte and Fuyo Platte.
Moravia high school juniors present Tea Tapper Tavern a clever mystery comedy in the school gym Thursday night at 8. The play unfolds as a summer afternoon setting with a hired man a widow and a mysterious message about smallpox. Quarantine misadventures and a secret passage lead to a happy ending as the chicken pox scare ends the show.
Exline staff led by Deputy Grand Master Nea Hism and Deputy President Velma Monroe installed 15 officers for the local Odd Fellows and Rebekah Lodges on Tuesday evening. A social hour followed with refreshments as the group reflected on the notable ceremony and attendance.
Farmers east of town report a rash of sheep killings by roaming dogs last week. Three dogs killed five sheep at Elmer Lockman’s place and four at Arch Thompson’s, with other damage feared. One dog was shot Tuesday morning. none belonged to the area.
Mr and Mrs F H Coulson entertained eighteen guests at their Moravia home for a New Year dinner. Guests included Mr and Mrs Lewis House and family of Hilton, Mr and Mrs Webb Zahniser and family near Oskaloosa, Mr and Mrs Chas Johnson and daughter Ruby, Mr and Mrs J M Coulson of Moravia, and Mr and Mrs Ted Wilson and family of Ava were unable to attend.
