In Centerville the Pfannebecker family suffered a sudden loss as Mrs. Pfannebecker died Saturday night. Over the next day, Mrs. Cecil Russell received word that her husband had died suddenly of a heart attack. The town faces two major local business fires, with questions about the cause.
Local residents debate youth conduct and punishment while noting Moravia’s Christmas displays. A new string of lights near Highway 60 adds festive charm, joined by a nativity scene downtown. decorations cost about $250 to install and maintain. Union’s annual Christmas Greeting issue is planned for next week.

Family, Farm Bureau planning, Saddle Club, and Spurgeons party attendances mark a busy social week in Douglas and nearby.
The little house on the hills feels empty as Rowena and Jim Logan moved to Moline Illinois for Farmall work in Rock Island. Roger Mullins returns from Vietnam to join a family dinner. Burdett Cox Nyle visit Mae Harper Friday. Numerous friends called and visited over the week including Crawley Wilson Bailey Cridlebaugh and Hoffman families. Mrs Cox ill with a cold.
Pleasant Hill notes from Mrs G D Curtis record a district church gathering at Chariton River Baptist Sunday school with guests Connie and Davis of Plano and Harley Sulser family. Activities include Christmas program practice, Mission Society and Ladies Aid events, and visits by Vera Moore, Florence Martin, Judy Martin, Mabel Moore, and others in Centerville North Bend Centerville and Golden Age Manor.
Moravia residents and friends attended numerous events including Christmas tea for teachers, past matron supper, teachers conference, and family dinners. Nearby Centerville Ottumwa and Corydon visitors joined in various visits, dinners, and hobby shows while track planning and house moves were noted.
