Four hundred forty children will perform in the annual grade school Christmas program on Thursday, December 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the high school gymnasium. Kindergarten groups open with songs, grades 1-3 present an operetta The King's Christmas Carol, grades 7-8 sing a group including Silver Bells and Christmas Gyro ls, and grades 4-6 conclude with a pageant The Symbols of Christmas.
Cub Scout Pack 40 met Nov 30 at the Methodist church with 62 attending. Awards: Stuart McDanel Bear badge Jeff McDanel Wolf badge and gold arrow point Eddy Muass man Wolf badge Russell Peterson gold arrow point Tim Hersey Bear pin Raphael Koffman Bobcat inductee Clay Uhlenhake Randy Whitehead new members. Webelos demos on water and air pressure. Dena Hawaii science trip with palm tree and dances. Monty Hahn noted as charter member of Pack 40. refreshments served.
Army Specialist Five Roger L Robinson 36 son of Mrs Lavera Robinson Moravia began a month of intensive field training November 8 with the Armored Division near Grafenwehr Germany. Training will stress communications combat tactics equipment maintenance and weapons firing.
The Appanoose County Beef Producers Association will sponsor a winter calf sale at the McCreary Sale Barn on Thursday, January 4. Cash-basis farmers may consign calves to support small herds, with no limit on consigned head. Dates for consignments are December 6 and December 20 at the Agricultural Building from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Members of the association will assist, and an advertising committee has been formed to promote the sale.
The Clover Leaf club gathered at Fern Penfield's home on Nov 29 for a co op dinner of ham and baked chicken. Members present included Jim and, Mrs MecAsinch Roy and Mrs Argo, Sharon Penfield, Michael and Timmy Moore, Mabel Moore, Mansel Tarbell, Verna McAninch, Glennie Dicks, Phyllis Dicks, Vera and Janice Moore, Julie, with visitors Karen Over tuft Peggy Beaty Catherine Beaty and co hosts Sharon and Fern Penfield. A get well card was sent to Vera Bennett in Corydon hospital. Gate prize winners were Edith Callen Helen McAninch and Vera Moore. Next meeting set for Dec 1 at Glennie Dicks with gifts for secret pals and homemade candy for menfolk.
Mr and Mrs Mark Ublenhake thank friends for sprayers thoughts gifts and cards during Reed’s hospital stay. Reed returned home Saturday and is recovering nicely at home.
Elsie Henretta Pfannebecker born March 31 1883 Sigourney Iowa died December 3 1967 at Ottumwa hospital aged 81 years 8 months 2 days. She married Gus Pfannebecker on December 3 1908 and had seven children. Surviving are husband four sons Lloyd Clif ford Earl and Ralph and three daughters Emma Veach Edna Russell Ruth Johnson, 22 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren. Funeral services were at Turner funeral home Rev Donald Plum officiated burial in Moravia Cemetery.
The MHS music program hosts a joint chorus and band concert Friday at 7 30 p m in the high school. Admission is 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for students with proceeds supporting the music fund for contest fees pins and trips. Performances include Mixed Chorus pieces Round and Round Let There Be Music Snowtime Holiday and Bells of the Sea. Boys Chorus Moon River Down By the Riverside All Through the Night Bells of the Sea. Girls Chorus Sing Ye to the Lord The Water Is Wide Hey Look Me Over Camelot. Girls Sextet Song of the Metronome White Christmas Happy Holiday. Taylor Aid met Friday December 1 with numerous members present. Gift to Reed Ublenhake after a fall and Christmas card for a former member were noted. Secret pals gifted Gladys Harsh and Joan Pettibone. Door prize to Vic Mihalovich. Next meeting January 5. Gratitude expressed to doctors, ministers, and friends for care and support.
A compilation of Sunday schools worship hours and evening services across multiple congregations including Nazarene, Evangelical United Brethren, Trinity, Moravia and Fairview churches. Activities feature Bible lessons on Cain and Abel, Christmas programs, youth groups, prayer meetings, and a Moravia Saddle club supper with a gift exchange. Major dates include December programs and weekly prayer sessions led by pastors E J Strong L Deedrick T D Hersey and others.
ETC club met with Florence Carson Thursday November 30 with roll call on How I spent Thanksgiving. Rook entertainment featured Blanche Kincade Bertha Laythen and Lucille Carter prize winners. Alena Hiatt won door prize. Mrs Carson served salad sandwiches cookies and coffee. The Nelson Ballanger family hosted a birthday anniversary supper at the Holiday Inn in Ollumwa. Moravia OEO S plans December 12 meeting with a Christmas supper. Regular session at 7 30 includes officer election. members urged to attend.
In a Thanksgiving post game, MHS girls beat Fremont 67-49 with Claudia Miller scoring 32 and Janet Rhee recording 12 steals while Shirley Helmick 20 and Linda Hint 13 also contributed. The Mohawks boys defeated Fremont 66-38 led by George Woodward with 17 points and Gary Tisue 14, as all players saw action in the final half. The team shots 39 percent for the night and next face Fox Valley at Cantril on Friday, Dec 45.
The Moravia Garden Club met at the home of Genevieve Morgan with Lois DuVall assisting. President Zell Callen led new and old business, including plans for the Holiday Fair at the EUB church basement. Members shared herb articles and soil stories, plus a Thanksgiving poem in roll call.
Robert Potts was elected Worshipful Master of Moravia Masonic lodge at the annual officers election held Monday night after a ham dinner. Other officers chosen were Claude Hawk S.W., Trenton Wilson J.W., Joan Main treasurer, Harold Mason secretary, and A. D. Kincade to the trustees. Joint installation with the Eastern Stars was voted for January.
The Past Matrons club held its Christmas party Tuesday evening at Mrs. D. E. Bishop's home with hostesses Mrs. Truxton Dicks and Mrs. Mary McAlister. Members enjoyed a meal and a white elephant exchange. Mary Herron was elected secretary treasurer and Trenton Wilson president. a card was sent to former member Rowena McFatridge in Dearborn Michigan.
Mrs Heth Hoblenz entered Davis County hospital Friday and underwent surgery Tuesday. She is improving and family members are with her. Mr and Mrs Leonard Palmer visited Iowa City Tuesday where Mrs Palmer had surgery on her left hand. Reed Uhlenhake returned home after ten days in Mercy hospital Des Moines following a fall. Donald Plum, lay minister of Albia, called Tuesday on Mrs Maude Coltrain, who is a shut in. Mr and Mrs R S Faber drove to Knoxville Sunday and joined Mr and Mrs Jack Lewis and Lora Ann to Winterset for visiting A C Thompson family. Mrs Melissa Felton returned home Tuesday from Ottumwa visit with daughter Mrs Bill Callen. Mr and Mrs J H Ward of Cedar Rapids spent last week visiting his brother Norman Ward and other relatives. Miss Zula Taylor called on brother Edd Taylor Thursday, who is slowly improving from injuries from a fall. Mr Junior Donovan and Cindy spent Thursday evening with Genevieve Kalvig and Bessie Donovan.
Don F. Self of Moravia died Monday evening December 4 1967 at his home northeast of Moravia at age 49 years 6 months 22 days He was born May 12 1927 at LaPlata Missouri to Marion C and Nora Farmer Self He married Carol Jean Rogers on August 20 1947 at La Plata They had five children Donnie Kathy Ronnie Linda and Bobby Survived by his wife six brothers and five sisters The memorial service was held December 6 1967 at 2 p.m. in Moravia with Rev L B Dedrick. burial in Hillcrest cemetery Moravia.
More than 40 fruit plates made by Mrs. Roy Argo and Moravia Garden club members were distributed by the chairman and helpers to ill or shut-in residents after the Holiday Fair at the EUB church basement. The annual Christmas-season charity is a recurring Moravia Garden club activity.
Charles Andrews of rural Mora underwent major surgery at Ottumwa hospital Monday and is slowly improving.
Mrs Lee Benz reports the Moravia Salvation Army drive has collected 68.50 with contributions still welcome at the bank. All donations are appreciated.
Mr and Mrs George D Watson of Des Moines announce the birth of a son on December 1 1967 at Des Moines General Hospital weighing 6 pounds 14 ounces. The baby is named Timothy Doyle and the mother Joyann Vincent is a former Vincent. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Guy Vincent.
Conservation officer Mark Ublenhake notes the deer season is below par overall with few seven to twelve point harvests. A standout group of 29 hunters on Tubaugh Bros. farms southeast of Iowa bagged one deer on Saturday and two on Monday totaling three. Pairings at Curls Mikels include Al Moravia licker and others like Kenneth Cal hous and Keith Gladfelder. Additional names appear but overall the season is weak.
