Center Activities Celebrate Santa Visit at Community Action Center

Eighteen preschool boys and girls enjoyed a Santa visit Monday at the Community Action Center in the Legion Hall. Thanks to Ed Thomas and Mayor Eugene Brunside of Albie for arranging it. Jan 8 starts preschool, Jan 2 and each Tuesday sewing classes, Dec 22 craft lessons for ladies, and a Birthday party on Dec 28. A teen-age girl craft lesson is planned for Dec 27. Each girl should bring ten cents for materials. Mrs. Virginia Kauzlarich met to discuss forming an advisory board for ongoing Center activities.

McCoys to Observe 25th Anniversary

Mr and Mrs Max McCoy plan a 25th wedding anniversary open house Sunday December 31 at Kendall Place Albia from two to four. Friends and relatives invited. Their son Cary and daughter in law will be hosts. The McCoys married January 1 1943.

Farnsworth elected Sth District President in Burlington meeting

Verl K. Farnsworth Appanoose County Auditor was elected president of the Sth District County Officers Assn at the Burlington meeting on December 12. Tom Dearinger Monroe County supervisor became vice president. The group meets quarterly to discuss county government issues and approved hosting the March meeting in Mount Pleasant at Wilbur Sater’s invitation.

Christmas program and family visits noted at local churches

Mr and Mrs Kenneth Gladfelder attended the Fairview Methodist Christmas program. Several families shared Sunday visits and dinners including Bogerts, Herrons, and Carters, while Jim Herron marked a birthday anniversary. The Lehmen family from New York attended a golden wedding in Moravia and visited relatives in northern Iowa before returning home. Other notes mention service members’ families, a Christmas in mine update, and Linds Burney returning home to Odessa after her father’s major surgery.

Mission School at Centerville

Centerville Church plans a six Sunday evening mission school from January 21 to February 25. Each evening starts with a light cooperative meal at 6 PM followed by classes for all ages on Japan. Everyone is welcome to join even if other church services are absent.

Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church Named

A church vote on December 17 1967 confirmed the name Salem for the local Evangelical United Brethren church formerly unnamed. The Salem name, proposed by the local conference, won unanimous support with no opposing votes, linking Moravia’s 1857 parish influence to the town’s church. The new designation stands at least until April 23 1988.

Santa Claus to Visit Moravia Saturday Afternoon

Santa Claus will be in Moravia Saturday around 3:00 p.m. He plans to give a treat to each child and merchants will give away six or more free turkeys to lucky town visitors. Drawings around 3:00 p.m. may vary. Local merchants invite late Christmas shopping for the holiday weekend.

Legion Auxiliary Christmas Meeting Recap

The American Legion Auxiliary held its annual Christmas meeting at Mrs. John Veach and Marys home with 22 members present. Mrs. Margaret Brooks led the business portion, the charter was draped for a departed member, and reports covered membership, fund activities, and sending 23 Christmas cards to service members. The group earned 833 points from the Butternut coffee club, then Margaret Callen led a Christmas story and carol singalong, followed by a light reception. The next meeting is set for January 15 at Mrs. Garnet Brains home.

The ETC Club met Thursday at Mrs. Grace Main’s home with Mrs. Merle Miller presiding. Ams Aleafa Hiatt won the door prize. rock games were led by Mrs. Ellen Paxston. prizes went to Mrs. Ruth Wilson for high score and Mrs. Aleafs Hiatt for low score. Refreshments included pumpkin tarts Christmas cookies candies and coffee.

The Twentieth Century club held its annual luncheon and Christmas program at Mrs. Maude Coffin's home on Tuesday. Mrs. Mamie Tisue led the program after a dimmer hour, with the club song, roll call, and a piano solo by Mrs. Mildred Bishop. An interview article by Mrs. Cora Stocker and Mrs. Violet Perry was read, and a gift exchange closed the pleasing afternoon assisted by Mrs. Ruby Cloyed, Mrs. Eva Miller, Mrs. Violet Ferry, and guest Miss Eleanor Miller.

Richard Harsh Art Instructor Earns Dual Exhibits

Richard Harsh, a Greenville Illinois high school arts instructor, learned his artwork was selected for the 1967 Mid-States Art Exhibition at Evansville Museum of Arts and Science. The show, judged by Walter Sharp, drew 270 accepted works from over 900. Harsh also earned acceptance in the Tri-States Painting Competition, to open January 1968 at Brescia College Owensboro Kentucky.

One Home Wins Traditional Prize in Moraine Garden Contest

Iowa State Highway Commission releases a five year plan outlining right-of-way purchases for Highway 60 in 1969, construction in 1970, and paving in 1971. Rex Angels Attend Funeral of Uncle Walter Rogers

Rex Angel and Mrs. Rex Angel attended the funeral of his uncle Walter G. Rogers in Peoria. Rogers, 74, son of Kate Rogers, longtime Moravia and Unionville area resident, was the last member of his family. Born November 24, 1893, he died December 11, 1967 in Peoria.
