A humorous reminiscence contrasts local Moravian merchants with big city decorations and a tale of a shopper’s mishap. The piece riffs on holiday shopping, festive displays, and a quirky buyer’s lessons learned from a department store encounter.
Rex Firkins purchases the Moravia Bowling Alleys from Centerville’s F W Bland, making him owner as Bland had built the lanes earlier that fall. Ward Grocers lead a busy bowling week in standings while Radios, Hellyer Durocs, and Turner Lumbermen vie for spots with several matches listed.
FFA students led by K. W. Hurliman use a field workshop setup with a steel barrel platform hooks and knives to slaughter a hog as part of a hands on learning session. They discuss process steps and reflect on the motto Learning by Doing. In a separate activity they shred corn stalks for insulation for local houses honoring a practice noted by Henry Giese of the state college.
Mrs Willie Millemon hosted a pink and blue shower Thursday afternoon in honor of her daughter Mrs Floyd Simmons. The gathering was social with dainty refreshments and the honoree received many lovely gifts.
The Twentieth Century club held its regular meeting with Mrs J L Dodd hosting on Tuesday afternoon. Roll presented an article on Sun Valley and Mrs E E Pember contributed an article on Pleasure Spots In California.
Jimmy Main won top honors in the county declamatory contest at Numa Monday evening in the humorous division. His selection was The Blue-Eyed Sheikh. He placed second in the home contest here two weeks earlier to Delbert Donahoe and won the sub-county meet at Udell last week. Other schools represented were Cincinnati Udell Numa and Exline with Moulton winning in oratorical division and Cincinnati in dramatic.
A reader reflects on the Unimportant Cogitationa column in the Union and her fascination with braided rugs. She recalls gifts from relatives, jokes about pants rugs, and memories of boots, a doll buggy, and a spring wagon. A fire incident from a matchlit display ends the reminiscence.
Ernie Easter was taken to St. Joseph hospital in Centerville on Monday for treatment.
Moravia hosts a heavy basketball defeat as Numa roared to a 90 to 15 victory on their home floor. E Tomitch scored 30 for Numa while Moravia's Joan Eakins led with a modest tally.
Class 8 of the Methodist Sunday school enjoyed a church social Friday evening. Eighteen neighbors husked corn at Clarence Dowd’s home Wednesday, while Mrs Dowd hosted a sumptuous dinner for the men. In charge were John L. Dodd and several ladies with baskets assisted by Mrs. Dowd.
Mr and Mrs G T Harn traveled to Des Moines last Wednesday for a New York Life Insurance Company agents banquet and program on Thursday evening. Mr Harn was a speaker at the program.
Mrs Chester Broshar hosted the Progressive club at her home on Thursday afternoon. Mrs Emil Halden was a guest. Mrs N R Ward won high score at bridge, with Mrs Paul Broshar taking second and Mrs Lester Brain receiving the low prize. Delicious refreshments followed the game.
The Mothers Study club met at Mrs Rollie McDonough home Monday evening with Mrs Paul Broshar as leader. Topic discussed was Guiding the Child in Play. Duane Veach Phyllia Zike and Richard Hurliman each gave piano solos. Mrs Doyle Luse attended as a guest.
The regular WMA gathering met at United Brethren Church Sunday at 7:30 p m with Mrs U O Main in charge. Virginia Zike led Christmas carols as the program unfolded through readings from Luke, prayers, hymns, and a short talk on Refugees.
Miss Betty Smith daughter of Mr and Mrs W L Smith of Hilton and Guthrie Shaeffer of Maquoketa were married Wednesday December 4 at Maquoketa. The couple departed on a honeymoon to Tampa Florida.
Mable Wilkinson daughter of Mrs Effie Wilkinson Ot tumwa and Russell Day son of J T Day were married at Wesley Methodist church Ot tumwa Saturday at 2 pm The ceremony was read by Rev Harold Roberts in presence of friends and relatives A reception followed at the Day home They will honeymoon briefly both employed by Dain Manufacturing Co Ottumwa Relatives attended from here include J T Day and family Miss Stella Albright and Mr and Mrs Jake Day
The BE. T. C. club held its regular meeting last Thursday afternoon at Mrs. Louise Smith's home. Roll call was answered with "Something we are thankful for." Mrs. Emma Palmer won the mystery box. Mrs. Winnie DuVall led the entertainment. Refreshments followed with Marguerite Smith, Mrs. Smith’s daughter, baking the date cake.
Ezra M. Coltrain, long time resident six miles east of town, came home Wednesday after a week in Ottumwa hospital for a major operation. His condition is listed as serious. Mrs Coltrain accompanied him to Ottumwa during the stay.
We express sincere thanks to friends and neighbors who came and shucked corn for us Wednesday. We are truly grateful to each and every one, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Dowd and Sona.
Mrs Emil Halden and P K Horner were elected to head Morning chapter OES for the coming year at the annual election in the Masonic temple Tuesday evening. Halden named worthy matron and Horner chosen worthy patron. They succeed Mrs Frank Seby and O A Burton. Other officers elected include Mrs J J Zike associate matron C M McFatridge associate patron Mrs Margaret Callen secretary Miss Lulu Burton treasurer Mrs Orval Burton conductress and Mrs Ruby Dille associate conductress.
Charlotte Jane Tarr Haver born 1867 in Greene County Pennsylvania later grew up near Iconium Iowa. She married Ed B Tarr in 1889 and lived in Nebraska and South Dakota before dying in Bonesteel on December 2 1940 at age 73 with nine children and many descendants surviving.
Moravia high school speech class stages four one act plays at 7 30 Tuesday evening in the high school gym. All 28 students participate as actors and crew with Richard Bergstrom directing. The program opens with The Powers That Be followed by The Villain Foiled Again Dress Reversal and The Auction and features casts led by Robert Derby Robert Boyer Veletta Tarbell Jean Veach Charlene Townsend Margaret Coltrain Carolyn White Lois Argo Jimmy Main and others.
