Lonna Bolin Wins Champion Lamb at International Show

Lonna Bolin, 15, a Moravia High sophomore, captured top honors in the junior market lamb division at the International Livestock Show in Chicago with a Hampshire-Suffolk cross named Mohawk. She and her parents drove 365 miles in icy conditions, taking about 11 hours, to reach the venue where her lamb rivaled for both champion and reserve titles.

Appanoose Residents to Attend Iowa Farm Bureau Meet

About 12 residents of Appanoose county are set for the 57th annual Iowa Farm Bureau convention in Des Moines December 9 to 11. County delegate Robert M. Scott of Moravia will attend business sessions to vote on policy resolutions elect state officers and shape programs. DeWayne Moore of Melrose will join the county women's session. The group will elect five members to the state women's committee and 10 delegates to the American Farm Bureau women’s conference in January. The convention features the big day December 10 with amateur talent, discussion meet for young farmers, a talk by J Merrill Anderson of Newton, and a banquet with county recognition and a talk by Dr Kenneth McFarland.

Moravia FFA Members to Leadership Camp

Moravia FFA members Eugene Fry Peg Pettibone Dennis Kaster Larry Mash and Doug Ballanger along with adviser Mr Carter will attend the South Central District Greenband Leadership Camp at the state 4 H campgrounds in Madrid. The camp run by FFA officers on December 5 and 6 is for first year members to learn leadership activities. Cost is 3 50 paid by the chapter and 5 00 by the member. They depart at 1 00 p m December 6 and return home at 7 30 p m the same day with attendees from 38 chapters.

Jaycee-Ettes Plan December Community Fundraisers

Jaycee-Ettes met on December 2 to discuss a December 6 chili and steamburger supper, a December 8 poster and poem contest with Bicentennial theme, and future projects including a January 7 spaghetti supper and a potential February carnival to support improvements at the community building. The group and their husbands will canvass on December 20 singing Christmas carols.

Progressive Club Meets With Verva McDonough

The Progressive Club met Thursday afternoon with Mrs. Verva Mc Donough. Bridge was played with prizes awarded to Winifred Schrodt and Lucile Carter and guests prizes went to Opal Callen and Lucile Gough. Turkey salad crackers candies nuts and coffee were served by the hostess.

Services Held Sunday For Nelfie Williams

Mellie Williams 86 died at Itumwa Hospital on November 28. Born Oct 1 1889 in Decatur County she lived in Moravia area and later Miller neighborhood. Survivors include son Raymond Williams and daughters Pauline Wright and Mary Marie Coltrain with eight grandchildren and two sisters. Funeral Sunday November 30 at Salem United Methodist Church, 1 30 PM, with burial at Hillcrest Cemetery. A memorial fund was set up for the church.

20th Century Reading Club Officers Elected and Christmas Events

The 20th Century Reading Club elected officers for 1976 with Rhoda Holman as president and Cora Stocker as treasurer. Members held a Christmas program with prayers, songs, and a memorial for Nellie Williams. Donations for Corrie ten Boom books were given to the public library. Other clubs held Christmas gatherings and gift exchanges, including the Past Matrons and Moravia Saddle Club events with plans for meetings and a Santa visit.

Moravia Mohawks fall to Mormon Trail in tourney opener

In the Bluegrass conference tourney at Humeston, Moravia the Mohawks lost 60-48 to Mormon Trail after a strong first half, trailing by four at halftime. Jeff McDanel led Moravia with 15 points, while MT’s balanced scoring featured four players in double figures. Moravia girls also fell to Mormon Trail 92-76 despite a 65-63 third-quarter lead, MT catching fire late. Barb Smith and Kathi Kaster led Moravia scoring with 36 and 22 respectively, but MT outscored 27-13 in the final period. The Mohawkettes hit 46.4% overall, MT 61.3% with 34 makes at the line. Next games loom against Melcher-Dallas and local junior varsity teams.
