Monticello officials debated raising pool prices and pursuing a funded pool budget. The pool, 23 years old and built on quicksand, risks major repairs or replacement with estimated renovation at 87,000 versus 250,000 for a new pool. Plans for a new indoor pool with the school were not pursued.
Jones county board approved four contracts including two for J C Costigan Elkader for a concrete bridge and an extra box culvert near Monticello, plus grading work by Fred Iben and a creek channel dig by Sanderson Construction Cascade. Local officials noted sign man position funded by federal veteran preference program.
A school bus overturns about three miles northwest of Anamosa on a county road at 8:25 a.m. Monday. Bus driver Bertha Anderson Piper of Wyoming says the vehicle spun into the muddy shoulder and rested on its side in a ditch. About 32 Anamosa Community students escaped serious harm and received minor injuries from doctors and the accident was investigated by the Iowa Highway Patrol and Jones County sheriff's office.
Paul Schneiter was chosen president of the Monticello school board at a special meeting. He will serve a one year term while also directing district one. Sam Schuetz was reappointed director of district one and James Corwin was sworn in as treasurer to fill an interim vacancy. Corwin’s term begins July 1, 1972. The board set the next meeting for Oct 4 at 7 30 p.m.
Long Drug marks anniversaries in Monticello Wyoming and Anamosa with 5 to 50 percent discounts on merchandise and prescriptions. Customers draw a capsule from a discount box and enjoy sale items in every department during the weekend and Tuesday 6 to 9 p.m., per manager Phil Tuetken. Items listed in the ad on page A-6.
Monti TV and Appliance Center owners Paul and Sandy Langenberg celebrate six years in business with an anniversary sale this weekend. The store adds Whirlpool appliances and will hold a drawing for a Whirlpool garbage disposal after Sidewalk Day. They also carry Admiral General Electric and Sony products along with a full line of records and tapes. Details on page C-11.
Guests at Know Your Town Night on September 14 spoke with school personnel and city officials after introductions by Mrs. Denton Ericson president of League of Women Voters who sponsored the event. Welcome remarks were delivered by Mayor C L Norlin Supt John Messerli and GMC President Dave Miller.
