Governor Hough calls for motorists to ease speeds from Memorial Day to Labor Day to reduce fatalities and injuries, citing speeds above legal limits as a major danger. Last year speed killed 12 700 people and injured 702 560, over a third of U S traffic deaths and injuries. A government survey shows speeds rose again last year.
The Monticello Express describes itself as the official newspaper of Monticello and Jones county established July 10, 1866. It publishes weekly on Mondays and Thursdays and is mailed as second class matter. Advertising is handled by national and Iowa services. Subscription rates are $4.50 within local counties and $5.60 elsewhere in the United States.
Leonard Wolf of Elkader, Democratic candidate for Congress from the 2nd district, credits broken Republican promises on parity labor housing and medicine for a rising Democratic ascendency. He warns that an unbalanced economy risks another economic disaster.

Mrs. C. Smith of Wyoming and Mrs. Irving Hintz of Monticello joined neighbors at Des Moines for the state convention of the League of Women Voters held over Thursday and Friday.
Greg ory Von Spreecken turned four with a May 17 afternoon party at his parents home in Center Junction. Guests included family and friends from Center Junction Anamosa and Onslow, with a gum drop tree cake and various gifts for the birthday boy.
Miss Beverly Mead of Highland Park Illinois visited her parents the Joe Meads from Tuesday to Thursday. Cedar Rapids residents Mr and Mrs George Burch spent the weekend with Mrs Ida Price. Mrs Bob Pittman Beverly Mrs Phyllis Donaldson and daughters Bensonville Illinois were Tuesday overnight callers in the Carl Seehusen home. Mr and Mrs Pete Miller Monticello were Wednesday evening callers with Mrs Anna Seehusen. The Joe Meads spent the weekend with her parents the Lee Huffman at Rossville. Friday afternoon callers in the Frank Himebaugh home were Mr and Mrs Bill Fullerton and Mrs Bertha Saxon of Chicago. Mr and Mrs Carl Seehusen were Saturday afternoon callers in the Bill Seehusen home in Cedar Rapids. They visited Mr Seehusen's sister Mrs Pat Carr Cheyenne Wyoming who was overnight guest in the Seehusen home. Mr and Mrs Jim Alexander Chicago Illinois were callers in the Frank Himebaugh home Friday evening. Mr and Mrs Pete Von Spreecken Wyoming were Thursday evening visitors in the Robert Von Spreecken home. Miss Marilyn Seehusen Cedar Rapids spent the weekend with her parents.
Sunday visitors at the home of Mr and Mrs Ambrose Kelley included Mr and Mrs George Kelley and family Mr and Mrs Donald Rosensteed Independence Mr and Mrs Albert Kammerman and son Cedar Rapids and Bertha Ann Kammerman Fayette Iowa.
A new schedule takes effect June 3 at First Presbyterian Church. Sunday school starts at 9 a.m. and morning worship at 10 a.m. Guest minister Dr. David Berger of the University of Dubuque fills in for ill Pastor Rev. W. Russell Hunter on May 27. A communion service is set for June 3 at 10 a.m. with coffee hour afterward.
Mr and Mrs Arthur O Rourke and their three children from Milwaukee Wisconsin visited last weekend in the home of Mrs Alice O Rourke the former's mother.
