A Monticello reader recalls buying two pianos for five and twenty four dollars and moving one to the city dump by mistake. The discarded instrument inspired thoughts of salvaging wood for furniture and a regretful memory of the “No. 1 piano” blues.
A new water tower in Adel with a 250000 gallon capacity will begin operation early in May. The item is part of a local update in municipal infrastructure.

Mrs Tony Gravel and David traveled to Marshalltown on May 5 for an operation on his other eye. The first eye operation was successful and local residents attended various social visits and events including a postal meeting in Monticello and a Boy Scouts exhibit at Hawkeye Downs.

The Scotch Grove Farm Bureau will hold its May gathering at Onslow Community Hall on May 11. Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Clark chair the program with the Jack Naylors and LeRoy Dirks on the refreshment committee. illness in the Paulsen home prompted the change. Memorial day plans and local health notes follow, including several community members ill with measles and housing moves in the area.
Mr and Mrs Clarence Guthrie brought their three week old daughter Susan Jane home from Monti cello hospital on Wednesday May 4. Sunday guests included Mr and Mrs Dee Serbousek Marion and Mr and Mrs Bob Guthrie Morley. Supper guests were Mr and Mrs Loras Kremer Monticello and the Russell Wolfe family Anamosa.
Sunday visits include Mr and Mrs Carl Seehusen and Julie with the Russell Jamiesons. The Ladies Guild of the Presbyterian church reschedules to Friday May 13. Visitors include Eleanor Wikins Ames mother of Jody Smith. Mrs Don Dreibelbis’ brother Marvin Schneider visited. Mrs Bob Serbousek recovering after May 3 surgery at St Luke’s.
The Iowa department of social welfare reports Jones county total April payments for old age assistance aid to needy blind and aid to dependent children at 24999 with 377 cases and 223 recipients. Linn Delaware and Dubuque counties are also listed with respective case counts and payments.
